North Carolina high school reportedly opens indoor shooting

Here is something we don't hear too much about these days. A shooting range in a school.

Perhaps 40 or 50 years ago, this wouldn't have been newsworthy. Today it is. Years ago there used to be "Rod and Gun" clubs in schools. Some schools had shooting ranges either inside the school or outside on school grounds. There have been stories of students driving to school with a rifle or two on the gun rack in the pickup truck.

It is reported that Smithfield-Selma High School in Smithfield North Carolina will be used by the JROTC ( Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) practice on the school's indoor six lane range. Cadets will train first with air pump rifles and after extensive training, they will be able to use rifles. The article went on to mention that the range was helped built with donations from North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

"There’s a marksmanship safety test they have to take, and they have to get a 100 on it," Commander David Wegman told WRAL. "In addition to that, they have to sign a safety pledge, get permission from home and then finally demonstrate on the range that they know how to handle one of these air rifles safely."

That is pretty rare nowadays, except possibly older military schools, where the ranges in some cases have fallen into disuse/disrepair and been re-purposed into something else. I'm sure some libs will want to weigh in on this when they find out.

Seriously good news, but my first thought was, "great, more demand for 22LR"

My high school has had a rifle team since the 1950s. It's in urban St. Louis, all boys Catholic. We shot against public school teams from Illinois and against plenty of scholastic teams at nationals.

However they are very rare in comparison to any other sport. Always good to hear of my interest in the shooting sports.

Trap is hugely popular around here as well. There's a public high school near Mexico, Mo that has a trap field behind the school.

I can still remember many private schools with their own rifle teams along with having basement ranges for area competition. Never heard of it ever being available in public schools.

I notice there's a particular 3-letter organization that was *not* involved...

Back in the day, they would have been.

I just finished up my last year on my high schools rifle team. Not very common and most are surprised when they hear but there are 9 other teams (all public schools) within an hour and a half of me in our league. There are state playoffs meaning there are even more rifle teams out west in our state but I don't know how many. Some schools still have ranges inside their school but others like mine go to a range to shoot. I hope this keeps growing in my state and others.

I was on the JROTC rifle team at Ben Lomond High, 1981. They had a range in the basement, I highly doubt it is still there.

Any "letters" involved are the ones the schools will allow, and those 3 aren't on the approved list for most schools

Many won't even let the NRA do their Eddie Eagle safety program

My local school district received a $15,000 grant from the NRA to start a trap team. They bought 15 11-87 shotguns. They've been practicing twice a week at my gun club.
