I recently posted about a gun safety presentation that was part of a larger safety day at my daughter's elementary school (My wife teaches there as well.) Some one else posted in that thread about using gun props in a opera production at high schools and the positive results of that. It got me to thinking of what kinds of firearm positive things actually happen in schools today.

Better than twenty years ago when i was in seventh grade, I was in the schools Rod and Gun Class. We were taught and tested in gun safety, were shot pellet guns at school, and we took a field trip to the skeet range. That was a long time ago. However, I am a public high school teacher and I know that there are still some positive things going on.

For example, in Southwest Missouri where I live and teach there are several schools that have competitive shooting teams. There is a school in central Missouri whose mascot is the Marksmen.

For the last four years I have had a student that is a Civil War reenacter. Every year he brings all his gear, including two rifles and two revolvers for a reenactment demonstration (He is not allowed to have them loaded.).

What other positive things do you know of that happen in schools today?

XD Fan - Thank you for a positive look at guns and schools. I was beginning to think that ALL schools hated the word "gun", and any mention of the word would get you expelled. It seems that all that is presented in the "media" is the ZERO TOLERANCE in schools of anything gun related. I'm looking forward to more of your type of experience (with my fingers crossed).

I had a hunter/gun safety class in 8th grade (1998). The police officer giving the class brought in a M-16, beretta 92, and a shotgun, a revolver of some sort, and explained them all; how to unload, check clear, general safety stuff. But to drive the fact home he had primer only shells loaded and the first time was good.

"Ok class, is this gun loaded?"

"No," we uneducated youngins responded.

*pulls trigger* BLAM! As the primer goes off.

Learned a lot in that class. Even though it was a little... "unsafe" I guess but it still drove the fact home

When I was in high school I was in JROTC and on the rifle team. Every year the entire JROTC would qualify on the rifle. It was the funnest part of the year for most of us.

Not all schools are anti-gun. In 28 years of teaching I have never worked for a Principal who was not a hunter and gun owner. I run into my current Principal at the range where I shoot quite often.

One of our teachers is into Civil War re-enactments and he brings his cannon to school once a year to fire it for the kids.

I teach hunter safety classes and routinely bring my guns for demonstration purposes.

The LEO that came and talked to our class showed me his carry gun for when he was off duty right in the middle of class and noone cared. It was very well concealed.
