I recently moved from Florida to NC... I have had a CCW in NY and FL for years and now want to know what the process is in NC...
I have seen a permit application for the Sherriff web site and also a link for a
state page on CCW but it does not have an application
I know the laws are strange here but can I buy a pistol here or do I need a permit to buy ? is the CCW permit a second permit I will need to carry and another permit to buy another handgun?
Are you allowed to transport in the car to a range without a permit ?
any info would help / Thx

Here is a link to a reasonable summary of North Carolina firearms laws.

To purchase a handgun, you must have either a handgun purchase permit or a concealed handgun permit.

Each purchase permit is for a single handgun, costs $5 in my county, and is valid for five years. After the initial purchase permit application was approved, the only thing I have had to do is call the Sheriff's office 24 hours before I want to pick up one or more permits and they update my background check.

Concealed handgun permits are "shall issue," cost $90, can take up to 90 days to be issued, and are good for 5 years. The concealed handgun permit can be used instead of a purchase permit when buying a handgun.

Any handgun purchase (or transfer), whether from a business or an individual, requires a purchase permit or a concealed handgun permit.

No permit is required to transport a gun in your car, but the law is ambiguous about the circumstances in which a gun is accessible in a car (which is a no-no without a concealed handgun permit). I always transport my guns unloaded and cased or bagged in the trunk of my car.

It is worth the effort to get a CCH just to avoid the ambiguity of transportation laws. Trunk is cool if you have one. Whaddya do in a pickup truck. I've been told LE holds to the 2 second rule. A officer had better see a loaded firearm within 2 seconds of looking in the window. Loaded firearms in the glove box constitutes a concealed firearm and is considered a no-no without a permit. Travel to Rock Hill, SC and the exact opposite applies. A loaded firearm had better be in the locked glove box.

A NC CCH bypasses all the nonsense.
