I'm driving from Florida to North Carolina. I'm a Florida resident and I don't have a CCW permit. I know I'm good in Florida, but can I legally keep a loaded pistol in the console/glove compartment of my car through GA, SC and NC?

You'l be fine till you get to NC since we have some strange laws. You have to keep your gun in plain view to be legal. My suggestion is that you keep in your console/glove box while driving and just place it on your dash if you're pulled over.

WAHOO 95 - " My suggestion is that you keep in your console/glove box while driving and just place it on your dash if you're pulled over."

I strongly disagree with that tactic.

If a cop pulls you over for a traffic violation, he'll be watching you like a hawk. Just about the time he sees you suddenly lifting a pistol up in his view, he's going to have his pistol screwed in your ear and you'll be finding out what it is like to be the object of a cop who is ready to shoot you if you make the slightest twitch.

I strongly suggest you just keep your mind on your driving and don't violate the traffic laws. Then, no problems.

Wow, certainly do not do that.

Any method of carry that requires you to go for your gun when you have contact with LEO is certainly not a good option.

Even if you avoid being noticed or shot most of the time with that tactic, if you get into trouble for going for your gun you are going to have no honest defense in court. I can just see it coming up in court after the officer flips out and arrests you at gun point, or has shot you and you survive to appear before a judge:

"Why were you handling a firearm when asked to pull over?"

"I was just trying to undo my illegal concealed method of carry so I wouldn't get into trouble."

To even honestly defend your actions you would have to admit to committing a crime.

Not to jack the thread, but I'll likely by doing the same trip this summer (though not through SC; further to the west, up 75 and US-441.) I do have a Florida carry license. I'll read up more later but, for now, do both GA and NC honor it?

when you hit n.c. just put the weapon out in the open on the seat for the duration that you're in n.c. if your stopped: cut on your interior/dome light, keep your hands on the steering wheel, and politely inform the officer/deputy/trooper that you have the firearm on the seat beside you. the law enforcement officer may secure the weapon during the traffic stop and then return it, probably to your trunk and/or unloaded. to all that think that an officer cannot secure your weapon during the stop. they can. don't get a case of the ass, you will go to jail in n.c. that is for certain. happy driving.

Sorry I wasn't clear but I wasn't suggesting you go to move your gun in a careless manner while the cop is walking up on you, nor was I suggesting he store in a place that made it difficult to get to if "being" pulled over. Doesn't take much effort or movement to move a gun from the console to the passenger seat once you see blue lights or see the cop pull out to come get you since most folks know they're getting pulled over well before "Smokey" gets up behind them. I ride with my DL/Registration close by so I don't have to dig through my glove box or make a lotta moves to get to it. In the days before getting my CCW I kept mine under my seat or in my console and simply stuck it on the seat before pulling over. I also had my info ready and my hands on the steering wheel before the LEO even got out of his car. When they approached me I informed them that I was in legal possesion of a firearm which was on my passenger seat. Each time they thanked me for letting them know and had me step out of the car while they secured my gun for the duration of the stop. I was pulled over many times in both NC and VA and never had any issues or guns pulled on me. To each his own, so leave it open and unsecured on the seat if you choose.

I do however have a buddy who had the cops called on him for brandishing by a some trucker who saw his pistol on his seat! Wasn't charged with anything, but he was pulled over at gunpoint and questioned since the 911 call made it sound as if he were riding down the highway waving his gun around at other drivers.

^+1

Better drive like a good little boy if you're not 100% legal on the carry or else put it in the trunk.

Crowbar hotel is not like Holiday Inn.
