I am working on loads to develop for deer season this year.
I have plenty of core lokts/game kings I have loaded up and they shoot well. I have taken plenty of whitetail with the 150 gr load I use in 308.
A buddy of mine recently sold his rifles (which were all 30 cal) because he really needed the money. He had a box of 50 150gr Nosler partitions he gave me as he can no longer use them. I have loaded up a small batch and the groups are about the same as my core lokt and game king loads.
My question here - Is the Partition going to expand reliably on whitetail or should I stick with the tried and true core lokts/Game Kings I have been using forever? I have never used a "premium" bullet for deer hunting. I just want to make sure its not intended for cpx3 type game and would still reliably expand on relatively close whitetail shots.

I use Accubonds with great success on deer...and from the Nosler website:

"The AccuBond® bullet was designed to mimic the on-game performance of the Partition® in a sleeker, more aerodynamic design by taking advantage of modern impact-extruded jacket design and bonding technology."

It would seem to follow that if the Accubond is supposed to be like the Partition, and the Accubond performs extremely well on deer...then the Partition should as well.

They do the same thing, the Accubond just does it with new design technology, and the Partition does it with a 65 year old design.

The Nosler reloading guide lists a min velocity of 1,800 FPS and a max of 3,200 FPS. That should cover your .308 over most ranges at which you'd be engaging.

Go shoot 'em up.

The Accubond and Partitions are two completely different animals. The Partition has a thin jacket at the nose and expands quickly. At reasonable ranges the nose blows off at the partition and the core drives on for deeper penetration. The Accubond has a larger frontal area when it strikes at the same range and usually doesn't penetrate as deeply due do the larger front. Both will work well on deer. Flip a coin.

I have a 40 year love affair with Nosler Partitions. I use them for all big game if they are accurate in the gun. However, any of the others you mentioned are perfectly adequate for deer.
Nosler Partitions are expensive.

If you were hunting elk or moose I'd say go with the Partitions every time.

Bottom line is, for whitetails it just don't matter. Either one will do the job just fine on whitetails. Yes the Partitions will expand fine on whitetails.

You don't need the Partitions, they will work just fine if you want to use them. They are essentially 2 bullets in the same jacket. The front half expands rapidly just like the Core Lokt, the rear half stays together to penetrate. You don't need the penetration, but it won't hurt.

You are confusing the Accubond with the Ballistic Tip.

The Accubonds perform on game just like a partition, just with much higher BC's. They combine the aerodynamics and expansion of the Ballistic Tip, with the penetration of the Partition.

Once again, neither the Partition nor the Accubond is really necessary for deer. But there is a good argument in favor of just using the same bullet for everything.

Actually, they don't give the penetration of a partition, not saying they aren't a good bullet, but they certainly don't perform as well as an NP when you need DEEP penetration.

I am a believer in Partitions. That is all I use in my deer rifle. I am sure that corelokts work fine though. I switched after I lost a nice buck to bullet failure. I have never had a partition fail under any circumstance. I have killed over 30 bucks without a failure, long shots, short shots. Never a complaint.
