Nothing wrong with Remington core locks I’ve killed a boat load of deer with them before I started hand loading. And it’s rite on the box they are the deadliest mushroom in the woods!!!
165 corlokt in 308 and 30/06 are great for deer and black bear.

They are an old design, but I really like the Core Lokt for the distances I deer hunt, which is average shot probably 75 yards in the National Forests in Texas. Maybe double that as a possibility when hunting the pipeline cuts here. I like Interlocks, too. But anything beyond that bulletwise is overkill for me.
A lot depends on the range you are shooting, maybe needing a better expanding or bonded bullet.

Hope you still sifting through all the responses. Welcome to the hunting lifestyle. IMHO the 30-06 is way over kill for any whitetail.I have hunted with one for close to 40 years. Always done the job, usually with 150 gr. bullets but also 165's and 180's when Moose hunting and a Deer presents itself. Now I like lighter recoiling rifles such as the 30-30, 6.5x55, 223 and 357 carbine. Also have a Ruger PCC in 9mm. Great stand rifle for fifty yard shots. Remington loads some 125 grainers in there reduced recoil line. you might want to try those. All the previous advice sounds great. Important thing is to practice trigger control and field positions. Small game is a great way to get in some practice.
