found some local for $.10 per round. 1325 rds avail. would you guys let this pass and hold out or grab it? i have about 900rds now but the family really enjoys shooting them up and dont feel comfy shooting them up if in case i need for squirrel season

Not the right place for this, but...

More than $0.03/rd for plinking .22lr is too much

thats what i was thinking. only reason i asked in reloading is we are all for the most part on the same page of saving money in the reloading hobby

For squirrels during these times I prefer my 41 mag, a little more available and about the same price that they want for 22lr around me.

I reload .45acp for about $0.15, and that's paying $40 for a brick of primers from Cabela's, bullets straight from MBC, and powder from Powder Valley. Not a chance I'd pay $0.10 a shot for .22lr. About $0.04 or $0.05 each for plinking stuff is tops for me, I prefer $0.03 for .22lr unless it's some premium stuff.

I agree, 10 cents a round for 22LR ammo is way too much IMO. My personal limit is 4 cents a round but 3 cents is much better. (not that will will see that any time soon)

If ya ain't got none and ya gots to have some now, then I guess ya pays the going price.

I've got about 700+ rounds, quite enough for my current shooting habits, which is curtailed somewhat by other responsibilities at the moment.

Just went to a gun show this weekend at Virginia Beach...wasn't too thrilled with the typical asking price range of $70 to $100 for a 525 round box of .22LR, depending on the vendor. That'a about 13 to 19 cents a round. No, thanks. If I'm going to spend that much on ammunition, I'll go for some larger pistol calibers.

Now, if I had NOTHING on hand, I MIGHT have bought a single box of the cheapest I could find, and nothing more. But I'll not be stocking up at those prices. I've plenty of .22 WMR, 9mm, .45 acp, and 12 ga to last me until the market recovers and I can start stocking up again.

As a side note, I did, however, pick up a couple Savage Arms 5 round magazines for .22 LR...which turned out not to fit the Mark II I bought a couple weeks ago. Beats me what the heck they're supposed to fit...I went to the Savage Arms site and looked up their magazines and didn't find an exact match. I can't take them back, of course, so they're just going to sit in my cleaning kit until they find an owner.

Anybody want's 'em, lemme know. I'll dig up my camera and post pics if there's an interest. If you can afford the cost of postage, you can afford these.

:)

RetiredUSNChief,
I bought a Savage Mark II BV (heavy barrel) last year and it came with a 5 round magazine. The 2 extra 10 round magazines I have for my Savage Mark II G and they fit in the Mark II BV. I was under the impression a Mark II magazine would fit all Mark II variants.

(I just love the Savage Mark II rifles)

I go to a lot of gun shows and look at what is on the tables.

At $80/ brick for low grade 22 ammo [ 16 cents] it does not sell.

At $60 / brick for low grade 22 ammo [ 12 cents], it moves.

Meanwhile, in gun stores, the price is much lower, but they are out.

What is your time worth? If you have it available, find out when shipments hit your local Walmart and plan on being there an hour before hand. Out here, guys show up about 6am for the shipment to come it. Takes their time, but 22 prices are in the 4-5 cent range. If you would prefer not to spend the time in line, 10 cents is not unreasonable in today's climate.

+1 for the Big 5 Sporting Goods.

WRONG!
My .22 will sit in the cabinet and collect dust before I pay .10 a round.
Definitely pass. Keep an eye at your local Wally World and LGSs. It may take a few tries, but you'll time it right eventually.

I like to go into walmart and call the numbers from the local Nickel Ads selling .22 ammo for an arm and a leg. It's interesting to see half the line waiting for ammo answer their phone when I call. double so when the clerk's phone rings.
Not really but that'd be fun.

I just picked up a Brick (525) over the weekend from Academy for $19.99. Granted I had to wait in line for over an hour before they opened, but still a good price.

My lgs sell the federal champion bulk packs for $18 or $19. The problem is they've only got a total of maybe 10 in since the first of the year.

I agree...in general and in principle.

However, you're like me and don't fit the qualifications I stated...we both have a store of .22 and we don't need any right now, therefore we can afford to wait.

Lucky us!

My mistake was in not bringing my 10 round for comparison purposes. I hadn't done enough research, evidently, to realize what I was looking at.

Here is a pic of the two 5 round mags I bought, alongside my 10 round. Note that the left hand side of the 5 round magazine does not have that "lip", which properly sets the magazine at the correct depth and locks it in.

The rifle is a Mark II-F. It came with the 10 round you see in the pic...I'd just like to have a couple 5 rounds for squirrel hunting, as I don't need the magazine to stick out that far.

5 and 10 Round Savage by RetiredUSNChief, on Flickr

Other than this, these are identical to my 10 round magazine. I looked on the Savage Arms site to see what other magazines they offered, and none match this profile. Their 5 round magazine shown has the same "lip" that my round magazine does.

I paid $18 each for them, but they're useless to me. If you know of anybody for whom they would work, I'll be happy to send them for the cost of postage just to get them to a good home.

Luck had nothing to do with it. ;)

Heh! True that!

I'm much better stocked on .22 WMR, though...I've an entire 50 cal ammo can chock full of that, and several more boxes to boot in my range box. (FYI, 70 boxes of Winchester .22 Mag will very neatly stack and completely fill an entire ammo can with nary a bit of room left over for even the most determined cockroach to find a spot.)

Wish I had kept my .22 LR can stocked as I used it, but oh well...I'll fix that as opportunity dictates.

:)

My new plinking round is my 30-06 308 and 45lc.

I know where you're coming from. I cast my own too so .45 Colt is costing me .06-.07 per round. Now squirrel hunting and such still gets .22 lr used, but I don't shoot a lot of it so the couple thousand I had on the shelves will last 2-3 years if I don't buy another round.
