I recieved my remington 870 last year for christmas, black 18" barrel model etc. and i came into some extra money to upgrade it the way i wanted so i did. so after finally being able to take it out and try it since the upgrades were made, this is what i found.

1)these do not make the best weapon light holders, i had an extra one and figured i would try it out. during a night fire last weekend, it made it through 9 rds and flew off on the 10th rd. i was using s&b "00" buckshot.
no worries though that is why i always have a back up plan.:)

2) the s&b "00" buck worked very good no issues with the ammo and it grouped realatively well.

3) the barrel shroud, i really saw no need for, i shot 40rds, but really don't think that i shot enough or fast enough to warant it being on there, just extra weight, but it does look cool though!:)

4)extended magazine, was a hoot, and gave me a capacity of 6+1, and i like that a whole, lot. i did have to use the dremel tool, to take off the little lip inside the tube so the plunger would go farther, and that was my only concern that the plunger might get stopped up, but it didn't i am very pleased!

5) The vertical foregrip, made working the action, quick and easy, and made follow up to easy.

6) and finally the pistol grip with full buttstock, is great and i love it, but it is a little to long for me, and i thik i might have it shortned up in the future.

conclusion, I love shotguns and i love mine, are all the accessories necessary? no not at all but they work for me, i really like the higher capacity, vert foregrip and the buttstock set up. it functioned flawlessly every time i take it out, and is a hoot to shoot at night!:D

Re the clamp, did the screw back out of the nut, or did it "just break"? Did you use any Loctite® on the threads? Was there a light in it, or was it around the barrel and mag?
I've been thinking of using some of the TacStar products, but I want to be sure any accessories aren't going to "go AWOL" after a certain number of rounds are fired. That would be highly annoyin'. :cuss:

yeah there was a light in it. i have a clamp on the barrel and mag tube and it worked great. this one was around the mag tube, and the flashlight. i didn't use lock-tite. the clamp didn't break, all the parts were intact when it hit the ground, i think the recoil just backed out the bolts, as i shot. i put it back on and it is good to go again, i will probally put lock tite on there next time, and i think that will square it away!

Mounting a flashlight

I had heard of and seen clamp on lights pop off shotguns. Some IPSC types told me they were useless for a defensive as so many popped of during their games.

Some one I trust (yes, Swampgator it was Mikey) suggested that I place rubber or somthing like that between the clamp and barrel and the clamp and the light. After looking at an old bicycle tube I settled instead on a section of a finger from a nylon surgical glove. This both protected my barrel from marring and provided a better friction surface than the steel on steel of the bare clamp and barrel or clamp and light.

Appearently many times when such clamps fail it is because of inertia. The heavy batteries resist recoil and so with each shot the clamp slides a little further forward until it actually pops off the front of the barrl or magazine tube or the clamp stays in place and the light slowly works it way forward until it is loose in the clamp and then falls out.

I have had no trouble with the surgical golve section (trimed to not be unsightly) melting yet so I am happy with it.

Give it a try with a section of bicycle tube or whatever and get back with us.

One last thing you might consider, the mag tube is not as sturdy as the barrel. Doesn't look as tacticool but you might try mounting your light on the barrel at either the 4 to 5 oclock position or the 7 to 8 oclock possition as far back as possible to make it easier to reach with a finger or thumb as you appear to use a butt cap switch rather than a currly cord and pressure tape. It would be better if you did not have to let go of the gun to switch the light on or off.

Hope this helps.

hey possum,,, is that one of the wal-mart lights??? does it use 3 tripple a batteries??? i have looked at them but wonderd if they would take the shock and pound a shotgun would give it... just currious thanks

I've never had a problem with my Surefire 618FA Forend
I've recently put the "old" SureFire 622 on my 500A. After I put it through some range time, I'll decide if it's going to stay.
I believe those forend lights (622 and the 3-volt 322) were SureFire's earliest models. The 6-volt models use two 3-volt batteries in series, wrapped into one "stick." SureFire put some kind of cushion between the (CR123?) cells so they wouldn't slam together under recoil. I ended up with an LIT5020 from a vendor other than SureFire. At least one site cross-references it to SureFire's number, but I may have to torture-test it to make sure.

{This is not a hijacking of this thread. Read on.}
The 622 also has only a momentary switch on it, so letting go of the forend will shut off the light. That might not always be a Good Thing™, so I'm thinking about a second light, to be controlled by the other hand. Whatever brand is used for that will probably also be what gets mounted on my Ithaca 37.
These discussions give me some good ideas on where to start, and possible ways to optimize a particular light/mount setup. I have some nitrile gloves kicking around from my days as an EMT, so I can try that if things seem to loosen up under recoil.
See how I steered that back to Possum's original premise? :D

yeah if i had the extra money to put to the shotgun then i might do something like that, but the money is normally spent on ammo or other priorties, but i do like the surefire forends, they are pretty sweet.

My plan for my 870 18in. is to get one of the new MagLite LED 2AA battery lights, and put a pressure switch replacement on the end of it. I then plan on getting one of the replacement clamps that has the three holes, and using this to secure the barrel, magazine, and front part of flashlight. Then, I plan on taking the stock 2 hole clamp, and securing the rear of the light to the magazine tube. Hopefully, the LED will be more shock resistant, and the whole rig will be more secure.
