Heard a lot of coyote activity last night, wife heard a weird squeal or something, and the dog was really "antsy" and on the alert. I was just my normal clueless self. Took the dog for a walk around the backyard today and found this. Those coyotes was really hungry, that is one nights feeding frenzy. The tracks told me there was three deer, one was bedded down. I think this was the smallest of the three, a yearling I'd say. The other two got away. About four days ago I found an unusual amount of coyote tracks back there, looked like a whole pack of maybe ten. The tracks say only about three-four-five did this. Looks like they carried off a lot of it also as there were no hind leg bones around. Hard times for both the deer and coyote when the snow starts piling up.

What an awesome back yard.

Thank you. It keeps me in firewood, very rarely do I have to "outsource" for an extra chord or two. Or is it "cord"? We have some deer that hang around, but I have this "thing" about not killing anything on the property. "Sanctuary" ya know. Keep the vibes good! (someone stealing my motorcycle(s) could be an exception!) Bruce the Moose was back there recently too. Didn't see him, but he left his tracks.

Looks like the pack had a feast. That is a good sign that they are not only hungry, but brave. They pack hunt and take down some decent sized critters and get a little bit of a chip on their shoulder so to speak. If that’s the area you walk your dog in, I would say that it’s gotten to the point of being a serious safety concern. Coyotes that will take down a deer would be the coyotes most likely to try to take down a man with a dog. Seems to me like it’s time to thin that pack out significantly. Sanctuary or not, hunting packs in your yard is something that needs to be dealt with. I recommend buckshot or ballistic tips. Either seems to work fine.

You have a point there. Tough decision, as I've killed so many coyotes in the past that it started to leave a "bad taste" on my mind. I got really good at calling them in at one time. Something to think about. The dog is a little guy, Yorkshire Terrier. Quick kill and meal for a coyote. As I always leave the house "well heeled", I'm good there, and any 'yote that didn't show the fear of man would lose his/her sanctuary status fast. Good points, well taken. Late in the year the coyotes do get desperate, and brave, I've seen that before. And kind of early in the winter to see that behavior. I know coyote well! Will give your comments some serious thought.

Turkey vultures — yes. Coyotes — NO. Every one I see is a target.

No doubt. The vultures don't kill livestock.
I had a few come down and eat 70 chicken one day. My wife, and trail cams both saw them. Wife was leaving for work and called me. Left 4 or 5 but carried the rest off. Before that I killed some/ left some. Ive killed every one I see now. Oddly enough they thinned down locally it seems. I don't hear them like I used to. Been probably 10 years and I hadn't had trouble but this past year I've had a crap load of fox though.

Oh I know. I used to shoot them on a regular basis. I was like Lawrence of Arabia, when he was staggering around shooting Turks with his pistol, then stabbing them with his knife! Drunk with killing them. (well, that's a bit over-dramatic) I used to ride herd on a sheep and cattle ranch, them coyotes killed 25 sheep one night. Around the house here, I never see them in the day, always hear them at night. I suppose if they don't behave, I could call some in and cull a few of them. That would keep them away for a while. It's possible that the coyote population is up, which would cause a bit more desperation. ? We'll see.

Shoot more coyotes.

Yep.....and the kill site would make for an easy set for a few traps too, at least for one or two. I don't have an issue with coyotes until they get to numbers to do the likes of above. Could be the deer was sick or injured and the 'yotes did it a favor too. Ma Nature is not always pretty and the above is a prime example. All of her creatures must eat. As has been said, the concern is more so they don't get too brazen, not that they are trying to survive.

It would appear that the coyotes do not fully recognize the "sanctuary" status of your property..?
Or maybe they do...

No, they don't! That's why they didn't leave me any back-strap. Ungrateful brats! About all they left me was the right eyeball, and that's probably gone by now. Going out to check on it in a minute. I think they mistook "sanctuary" for "free-zone". Or "Ugly's Resturant". Where they can get anything they want. Or something like that. :cuss:

I think, the yearling they got was possibly bedded down, and they got lucky, were able to jump it quickly. The other two seemed to get away easy, and I didn't see any coyote tracks that showed they were chasing the other two. In fact, around and near the the one they got I saw no signs of a chase. Only about a ten yard "struggle". But, that's just my theory and I'm sticking to it! Going out right now to see if they finished it up. If I never post again, means I am coyote meat. On the other hand, I think I'm too old, stinky and Ugly for them to consider making a meal out of me. We'll see.

Wa is getting over run with coyotes. I had a number of issues with them and livestock when I lived there. Insult to injury, you can’t use foothold traps in Wa, only cage traps which 99% of coyote wouldn’t even think of approaching.

Doing my part down in Alabama though. Got 2 coyotes and 5 fox in the last 8-9 days on the trap line.

good luck
