I've been collecting old military riles for some time but have decided that I would like a bolt action target rifle for the range (100 yards only, and not for hunting).

I found a used Howa Model 1500 308 with a scope and bipod that is within my price range ($700 or less).

The bore looks good (I wish I had a bore scope!) and it "feels" pretty solid. 2 hours of browsing the internet has made me think that Howas are a good value.

My question is whether I should be looking for a different brand for that price. I can use my dad's scopes so really the $700 range is what I would pay for the rifle only.

Again, I am only familiar with old military stuff so I could also use a little information about brands in general.

What are the big rifle brands and do any of them make a good target shooter for $700? Remington, Winchester, Cooper, Kimber, Mauser, Browning, etc...

Just assume I know nothing about rifles...

Also, I'm thinking the 308 would be good because I could find milsurplus ammo for it? A 22 or HMR seem too light for 100 yds (if windy).

The Remington 700 Tactical Target Rifle looks perfect. I might sell some guns and consider it. Thanks.
 
Savage makes about the most accurate turn-bolt for the money right now. The Remmy is grossly overpriced for their quality and their accuracy is overrated without putting a great deal of cash into accurizing it. I would take a strong look at the 10FP or model 12FV. I would also highly suggest going with a .223 rather than .308Win. for maximum range of sub-500yds for punching holes in paper (and it is capable of much more). The .308 will only provide more recoil, more cost, and less accuracy (because you will likely shoot it less due to the aforementioned drawbacks). Don't skimp on the optics or the mounts, depending upon what your father has, you may want to purchase a new scope to achieve the greatest accuracy out of the platform.

Savage dose indeed make a nice bolt action rifle. My brother has a Savage model 12F/TR and it shoots great right out of the box. That rifle is capable of a lot better accuracy then what me or my brother can proved. We found out real fast when our father the real target shooter sat down at the bench with it.
 
I'm just curious why you would move out of the milsurps for a target rifle. Why not a nice Mosin; either M91/30 or M38? They are great shooters at 100 yds and beyond. Just asking. :confused:

You can buy a lot of 7.62x54R ammo with the difference in price; even if you go for a sporterized model.
 
Maverick223 makes a lot of very good points. I would add that ammunition and/or reloading components for .223 are typically cheaper than for .308, which is helpful for range usage round counts.
 
Since you already collect old military riles why don't you stay with that and get one for target shooting. The Swiss K31 Karabiner normally shoots moa, even better with a worked up load. Some Enfields, in like new condition can get close to moa. many of the WWII mil-surps had 'sniper' versions that were hand selected for accuracy.
 
i would have thought that you'd use an Enfield #4 for this, but if your looking for something more modern i'd highly recommend the Savage also.

it's both accurate out of the box, especially with the Accu-trigger and the Accu-stock options, and a very good value for the money

Do not overlook new Marlins in either xs (short action) or xl7 Long action) Got one in 25 06 very happy with it. Less than 1 inch @ 100 yrds with cheap winchester 120 gr. expanding powerpoints. Will try to tighten it up after deer season, welll maybe not afterall I aint never had one to stand up long enough for 3 shot group!!! they seem to lay down for some reason WONDER WHY???
