Well I live in Palm Beach county, Fl (I'm not rich). I always figured after a bad hurricane that there would 12 or so hours of rioting, chaos(whatever you want to call it) So I made my preparations around that timeline. Then Katrina came and I found out I wasn't even close to prepared. So now I'm looking to buy a bunch of stuff hopefully before next hurricane season. I have an 11-87 and a ruger P-90 in .40 and a buckmark in .22. Most people wouldnt consider a .22 pistol usefull with all hell breaking loose but i can dump a 10 rd clip into the a 1.5" x ring at 30 yds with it. With the .40 at thirty yards I shoot a ten shot group about 5 inches (I shoot the whole mag firing as fast as I can reaquire the target) and well the shot gun is a shot gun and I've been shooting it since I was a kid hunting pheasants in NJ. Unfortunately the relatives that I've take to the range are all awful shots but at least they won't shoot me if i hand them a firearm during an emergency. After katrina i dont count the handguns if I'm using a handgun it's over. So now I'm looking to buy a couple of items and spend a lot more time at the range with my cousin, he has potential it isn't his fault he waas never taught how to shoot.

MY shopping list

for my 11 87 a magazine extension the biggest one I can find

another shorgun probably an 870 someone made a good point about the sound of pumping that first shell making any intruder run for the hills

for all rifles and shotguns that i have or will purchase 3 point slings I'm ambidextrous (primary left) so I want to be able to drop my long gun and pull the forty fast

an AK I saw one of those arsenal AK's looks good to me

an AR-15

tons of ammo

civilian body armor ( the heaviest crap that i can buy legally)

what am i missing

First off, WELCOME.

Second, hop over to Strat Tac and read all the tons of information about hurricane survival and lessons learned that's been discussed.

Third, be prepared to be surprised by what you read, since the most important things you read about aren't firearms.

Always, let us know about what you learned.

All that would do is give away your position. I would rather have the element of suprise.

4. I "racked" the shotgun several times during the tests, and no bystanders lost control of their bowels.
Conclusion: Racking a shotgun will not make the bad guy faint.

The 2 different battle rifle are listed for the fact that they use the 2 most common rifle rounds i'd take a forty carbine and a ruger 10/22 just because i have a ton of that stuff already all my other hurricane stuff month of food and water is taken care of mostly but i'll find those threads thanks. I'm lucky also that i have a cousin who's twenty years older than me and has been thinking about this for a long time now he's in the process of making a tesla pump to use to generate electricity it was his suggestion that i have various weapons capable of using different ammo because who knows how long it will be before ammo will be available after the SHTF

Jamis, Kodiaz,

Not to start a 5.56 vs .30 cal argument, but the AK and AR ain't "battle rifles" (proub pappa of FALs and M1As:D ). If you're just defending the homestead against trolls you might be better off with the lighter recoil of the AR and AK than the heavier 7.62X51 rifles (unless you spend a lot of time practicing with it).

You're best bet is to find enough neighbors of like mind and coordinate with them so that you can protect the neighborhood. A single individual can't be everywhere at once nor 24 hours a day. A loosly organized group is much much more effective and can support each other in recovery efforts. Try to be sure to include a couple of families that have a medical professional (nurse, EMT, FNP, PA, MD) in them. They can be more important to your survival than some SEAL wannabe.

In your case I'd go with the shotgun and the p-90. As fun as it would be to have battle rifles and ammo slung all over you it just won't be practical.

Remember, you won't be able to snipe people out 200 yards unless you're being sniped at...which would be unlikely. Most of the SHTF stuff in a hurricane situation would be fairly close in (i.e. shotgun range) I would think.

To add to your list, you may also consider a bandolier...one of those that holds 50 rounds or so. That way you can add some slugs, bird bombs, 00 Buck, etc. and have them all in one place.

I'd also get a good weapon light for the shotgun (I need to get one too) - doubt the bad guys are going to make a run at you in full daylight.

HSO thanks a lot I I was reading posts till 2 this morning as for the bandolier i have a 3 pocket shell bag that can hold at least fifty shells also its on a belt ill be putting a holster for the p 90 on the left side

if i see 50 people walkng up my street not from my neighborhood after a hurricane i dont plan on waiting for them to get into range of their weapons i'm close with a couple of my neighbors but trying to find out if they are like minded without sounding crazy isnt easy only after wilma do aunt and her husband appreciate i do know that my neighbor across the street is armed he saw me loading the gun cases into my car before wilma and we had a little talk about that I told him i wouldnt like it if i came home and got shot with my own stuff
well after i finished loading and was ready tp go to my aunt's my neighbor starts putting gun bags in his truck because he goes to his brothers for the storm

but finding like minded individuals isnt easy

sorry for the double post but i dont plan on being by myself (if i was i would just have 1 shotgun 1 pistol and 1 rifle) i've taught my aunt and her sons how not to shoot me in the back if they are holding a gun and i've taken them to the range granted they need a lot more range time but we're not dealing with battle hardened somalians here who wake up in the morning and have wars every day we're dealing with hoodlums and idiots who didnt fail to prepare for a bad storm as soon as you fire and they see people dropping they are going to run for their lives as far as neighbors across th street from my aunt 1 ex soldier and one active reserve the neighbor to the other side is a cop and he looks ex military
2 miles north my best friend ex CB (navy) my neighbor from home stays 2 blocks from my aunt's house so if both the boys are home across the street and the cop then me my aunt and her older son thats 6 of us that puts all the stuff i plan on getting in play

Don't start off talking to the neighbors about guns. Try, "If anyone's got a generator that could run the freezer for 2 hours a day I'll make sure there's enough fuel to run it for both of us", and go from there. Again, it ain't about the guns primarily.

Got Mini-14?

I found that after Rita my Mini-14 w/ folding stock very light and easy to tote on a 4 wheeler. I am not a good shot but i can put 19 out of 20 into a watermelon at 100 yards with iron sights. I dont rate my shots in 10 rings, but as BG stoppers. I'd rather get 1 center mass shot in a split second than 1 between the eyes shot in 3 seconds:evil:

I never talk to anyone about guns my neighbor happened to see me while i was packing the car so he saw what i was putting in and knew what it was. the only person ive ever had a full discussion of SHTF is my cousin in miami who is super prepared when i get the other stuff it will be put in hard sided 2 rifle boxes so it just looks like hunting stuff ive looked on the other posts i'll be looking into a water filter as far as my bugout im not leaving before a hurricane because sitting on i 95 while the wind is going 140 is not my idea of fun. i go 15 miles west to my aunt's if things are really bad we go from there another 10 miles west to her friends farm/ ranch

Power was out here for over a week during Wilma and we didn't have any rioting and only a little looting (of businesses).

The money you spend on all the rifles, body armor & etc. would be better spent on water, food & gas. Maybe a generator if you don't already have one.

I wouldn't bother with a .22.

And use punctuation, your posts are impossible to read.

Work with your neighbors to put together a "neighborhood hurricane collective" or something of the such... Generator or three, who'd watch 'em, how much fuel to stock up, whatever... Someone else will likely bring up the concept of the boomstick.

I'd get a good handgun (a lot less obtrusive), a shotgun (870 or 500) with an extra 18.5" "riot" barrel, and a minor caliber carbine... 9mm, .357, .45, etc... If it takes the same round as the handgun +, if the same mags ++. A .30-30 (politically correct...) is probably as large as I'd go.

Goin' all organizational, and trying to get the whole neighborhood to standardize _will not work_. It'll irritate the heck out of the individualists, and the "we don't need guns" people will use that to put the concept away.

You're not gonna shoot 50 people walking down the street looking to loot the neighborhood. What's more likely to happen is that they see the "armed neighborhood collective - loot somewhere else" signs, and go somewhere safer for 'em.

Hello. First thing you gotta do is realize that you have made more preparation than 90% of folks. You need food for a week, 1k ammo for your weapons, cash, lights, a cell phone (will not work in a Katrina scenario, ours were out for a week after Charlie), a propane camp stove and 1 lb bottles (or a grill with 2 20 lb tanks). Staying out of sight is way better than a confrontation with armed threats. You cannot prepare for a direct hit from a cat-5. Joe

I have the stove and a bunch of little 1 lbers. have four of the walmart size propane tanks for the grill. main reason for the new firearms is after Wilma

A. I was hassled leaving the grocery store(buying bee spray Aunt's allergic) this was thursday, the fourth day of no power.

B. Friday evening 5 days after no power from a "minor" hurricane four guys in a car asked my aunt if we had food this was around 8 P.M. (this year curfew in the area was not well enforced 7 PM curfew supposedly)

11 PM someone shines a light in the house then drove off they were in the drive way never got out of their car

3 AM some guys were running from the Police ran thru the backyard being chased by police

This was 5 days after a storm where very few people lost their homes, where

stores were open the next day (Tuesday) and I was in a supposedly good

area Wellington, Fl.

Granted none of this happened during the 2004 storms but i think that people

are moving into the area with section 8 assistance which is why the area has

changed

This is why I'm looking into more firearms so I can arm my relatives for next

time (after a lot of range time with them). I'll probably get a ccw soon, so i

have the permit for storm season.

Way too many things happened a few days after a minor hurricane for me not

to make adjustments to my current arms. A .40 pistol a 12 gauge semi and a

.22 target pistol (which I don't count). Now maybe this happened because

these people hadn't been thru a storm but I'm not taking any chances.

I'm very happy with my level of non gun hurricane supplies and in that area

my aunt and her husband (with a lot of nagging from me) have done a good

job of having all that stuff squared away year round now. I have plenty of

food, plenty of water and plenty of cooking fuel and we purchase more on a

regular basis I've even started putting food and water in my apartment if we

got a bad storm and it looked like it would be months before power we got

power again we could take one of the trucks here and empty my apartment of

all supplies right afterthe storm ended or the next morning(early like sunrise)

Sorry about the punctuation I hope this is a lot better.
