…what do I do?
Well, he asked.
Fellow had an old 870 Wingmaster with fixed IC choked bbl. Inherited it and it needed some attention. “Uncle about your age; only younger.[sigh…]. He used it for everything, and I recall the time he said he cracked the forearm, The International Scout backed over it. How could that happen out Duck hunting?- He asked. I asked if he had ever been Duck hunting- when he said no – I explained it to him. *grin*
So he finds a used stock from someone that just had to have synthetic and calls yours truly.
I take the gun and give it a once over – yep taken care of, had character, I could just imagine the stories this gun could tell. I take and set an antifreeze jug on its side; and using my knife I cut out to make a parts washer. Bolt, trigger group, and such go inside and then I pour Mineral Spirits in.
While the wood is off , we seal the ends, bolt hole, and all with Tru oil. I thought he was gonna croak when I used his battery drill and 0000 steel wool to clean the mag tube and bbl. I handed him the receiver, and toothbrush “ have fun dipping the brush into solvents and brushing, this drill part is “highly technical†[ okay I wanted to play with the neat drill he had].
My stomach said “time to eat†– so might as well eat and the stuff dry.
“You really got this down to a simple science†Not sure if he meant the Shotgun or the eating part. Friday is Catfish day down at this new hole- in- the wall…not to mention the young cuties …
On the way back we stopped at a Auto Parts store. CRC Brakleen and “umm, you got any car wax? I asked. Well he had been meaning to pick up some to do the cars …The Mother’s [tm] with Carnuba in the bottle was tossed in the basket. “Why that one in the bottle?†he asked. “I’m lazy and I can squirt instead of dip†I replied. I also bought 4 of those small round brushes, about .45 cal – “what are those for?†You’ll see I replied.
I give him the bbl and receiver to wax and polish, after I spray everything with Brakleen. As he does that I toss his 1911 and his wife’s K frame nightstand gun in the parts washer sans grips. The brushes are the perfect size to fit the bore. I just “squish “ the round wire end and put a patch on. Shove through chamber end, pull out muzzle end with patch pulling out any debris from the brush on the 1911. I mean these are just like a long nylon bore brush anyway; just don’t need a cleaning rod. The next smaller size fits the K frame, just a bit more care with the muzzle end of the bbl, charge holes- no problem.
I stick the portion of a Al cleaning rod in a vice, bend it, and hacksaw it off, he now has Chamber cleaning brush.
“Hand me the Red Devil lighter fluid can†I asked. “What is in it he asked – I told him “oilâ€. “ Well what is in the Zippo Lighter fluid can"- he inquired, “Zippo lighter fluidâ€. I replied. *smirk*
“I was going to order some gun oil and gives the name of some fancy hyped brand name and other “gun stuffâ€. I replied no need to spend monies when more important stuff like ammo should be the priority along with lessons. He has another Uncle that can shoot; he will get some great lessons from this fellow.
As I reassemble I give the pointers about how to inspect and maintain. Main thing is to focus on chamber (hence the chamber brush) extraction.
Guns are ready to shoot. I had been asked to pick some ammo, so I snagged a 5 pack of slugs. Tack up a paper pie plate and shoot a tight group. “How did you...you’ve done this before…†Hey every now and then I get lucky and something from my past testing – still works. His bbl likes the Federal Slugs, the Win and Rem didn’t do as well.
Anyway get him all patterned and set to go. Nice gun, great kid, he will be fine.
“So what exactly is this oil†he asked. He noticed the cleanup after shooting about a 100 rounds was easy, minimal. We didn’t use any solvent or spray. Just tooth-brushed , wipe off, and ran the chamber brush with a patch over it.
I hesitated, and as suspected he almost fell over when I told him. Friend I know has a new Ford that is spec’d to use 5w-20 Motorcraft synthetic blend motor oil while under warranty. I just put that in a Red Devil lighter fluid can.
I left him with pipe cleaners, and long wooden Q- tips. Informed him the Pharmacy has the long wooden ones, the Trigger Group “puncher outer†was from the corn on the cob from Popeye’s [tm] and the pipe cleaners from the grocery store.
Pipe cleaners work great to clean the breech face and extractor. If he ever sees his Uncle Clean a 1100, he will see these used to clean the ports.
“I was gonna – I wanted to order “something†gun related he said. I told him to order his wife the Eagle Secret Service Grips, His “instructions†involved buying something else local.
I handed him 4 value packs of ammo. “What do I do now†he asked. I replied when you shoot this up – buy more and do it again, Repeat often. I gave him the BA/UU/R dealie to mull over. His Uncle may not know the Acronym, he knows the practice well.
Not only is this guy tickled with a great gun with some sentimental value, he was so "impressed" that I was able to pour the mineral spirits out of the "parts washer" through the top and not spill a drop into another clean container for use again. I'll let him explain to his wife why he got into a pair of her panty hose with a run in them and took the scissors to them....I needed a filter. *grin*
