Yeah, she gets it from you …

No I didn’t find out I was a daddy…

Once upon a time ™, A single mom, approached me to teach her to shoot. The divorce from an abusive husband, the concerns of being a single mom in today’s world had hit home – literally.

Daughter was not very trusting of men, since mom was trusting of me, well she figured she would stay in the shadows and just watch. I let it go, knowing she had to be comfortable with the whole aspect of shooting, after all kids do suffer the brunt of bad relationships and divorce. I just sent a Eddie Eagle tape home with mom, and waited.

“Did you bring that single shot .22 rifle today?†Daughter asked. I replied I had. “I know the 4 rules, and I have those kids “ears†and glassesâ€. She put them on. Mom shrugged and then winked at me.

Time passes and the daughter is wearing a bandana because I wear a bandana. She brings “her†.22 single shot to the range , it used to be mine, but single shot .22’s of mine had a habit of finding new homes, homes with kids for “some†reason.

More time passes “I want to try scatterguns nowâ€. We had passed from single shot rifles to handguns, why not?

Some time later I would get a really big hug as I handed her back my SX1 two barreled set “It is yours now†-didn’t take long to hear about trophies and such either.

“ Just wanted you know “your student†wrecked her truck out on the back roads …hurrying to “bust quail†– I believe that is your term†– Mom was trying not to laugh as she related the story, didn’t hurt the truck too bad, Grandpa’s work truck…he was laughing about it too as he pulled it out of the ditch.

“Your ‘wild child†bought a Citoriâ€
“Got her another 28 ga reloaderâ€
“She gotten to where she shoots pump guns most of the time, quit competing.â€
“Another damn book of Brister’s came in the mail today…she’ll probably give this one away too. “
" Well she found another old blue and wood K frame today".
" Oh she prefers to carry and shoot a 1911 style"....

I’d get updates from time to time.

So not surprised when I get a call from the Mom,

“… I was sitting there watching my daughter teach a little boy how to shoot. I was talking to his mom, a mom divorced from a bad relationship. I have been teaching the mom to shoot, reminds me of myself back when…little boy is wearing a bandana like daughter does, then daughter up and gives the boy the single shot .22 rifle , daughter is grinning , us moms got tears, the little boy is ecstatic.

Yeah, she gets it from you …

humph.

Not bad enough to corrupt kids all by yourself, ya gotta go teach them to corrupt other kids too.

Oughta be proud of yourself, not just doing the torch passing thing but teaching it too.

Sounds like you did a good job with this one, hope she finds a good man someday who will thank you for teaching her. I say 'thanks' every time I see him to The Wizard who taught my wife the same sort of things long before she and I got married...

Thanks.

A moderator and myself were exchanging PMs , seems we both share this feeling about new shooters and seeing them grow. We also noted how folks lose sight of what is important. It is not always the guns, the doohickey's and such, the safety, basics and fundamentals are needed...even if one has been shooting for awhile, never hurts to be refreshed.

Truth is, maybe I'm supposed to "get 'em started" , and the instructors are supposed to train them on defensive stuff...competition...hunting...

Not shooting like I used to, Have a feeling Wild Child would kick my butt. Heck even the Lady Mod I PM-ed would kick my butt...I still have an edge on her on shotguns....maybe.

I really don't care...it is the principle of the whole thing for me.

...yeah I always suggested accelerating through a curve tho' ...your supposed to fish-tail around them on farm roads...that is how I was taught
