A buddy bought a new Remington 700 in .300 WSM.

The ammo he has is 150 grain Winchester Super X Power Max Bonded. It comes 10 rounds to the box. (http://www.winchester.com/Products/rifle-ammunition/Advanced/Power-Max-Bonded/Pages/X300SBP.aspx)
Upon firing, the case necks split about 40% of the time. The Winchester website lists the MV at 3270 f.p.s., which is stepping right along, but the frequency of neck splits has me concerned. The primer is flattened and there is indications of cratering, too.

I have attempted to find a way to contact Winchester, but their website has no "Contact Us" button nor any contact information that I can find.

Can anyone here help?

Says they are on Facebook and Twitter on their site, but I didn't find an e-mail address or phone number.

I'd be contacting Remington. Odds are about 50/50 that the problem could be the rifle and not the ammo.

At the Winchester website, click on the "customer service" tab, then click the "contact information" tab.
Or if you don't feel like doing that, here's a link.

However, before contacting them I would try a different type/brand of ammo and see if it does the same thing. If it still does it, he needs to contact Remington, not the ammo manufacturer.

i've experienced a lot of split necks on the first firing when using Winchester brass for reloading. they weren't hot loads by any means. just lack of annealing, methinks.

T'was factory ammo, though, certainly loaded hot. Can't say that I have had my own .300WSM or .243WSSM ever split necks with factory rounds - so far.

I passed on the suggestion to try another brand of ammo to see if the split necks recur. We shall see...

Just a suggestion, but I'd mic the O.D. of a fired but unsplit case neck from his gun, the neck of an unfired round of that particular ammo, and the neck of a fired round out of your gun. Might be some information there.

Hmm, I was just resizing some once fired 7mm RM Super-X brass I got from a buddy that doesn't load, and noticed several that had split necks also? This was not previously loaded, and had not been resized yet. I noticed while lubing the brass. It got my attention and concerns me as to whether there may be some QC issues with Winchester brass lately.

^^^ Fair assumption with this thought. We seem to be hearing more of this sort of thing. I would be lead to believe price is king, quality falls way short these days.

A reasonable assumption, yes. However, the particular ammo noted is $35 per box for 10 rounds. Doesn't look like price point would be the overriding concern there, tho.
