I'm looking to 1) get up to designated qualifications in pistol and rifle, and 2) maybe becoming an instructor for both

a) How hard is it to do these? I had heard that qualifications were relatively easy for the NRA. I'm a decent shot but by no means an expert, and don't have competition barrels or anything. Is this attainable with a little bit of practice?

b) How long does it take to become an instructor?

c) How do I get my hands on the materials for this

d) What materials do I need?

Many thanks ahead of time!

You need to find a NRA Training Counselour in your area. They are the "instructors who teach the instructors".

Start with the NRA website and go from there. You may need to keep looking though as I found the new site doesn't have the most up to date info.

Back when I became an instructor the list of TC's they sent me included many who were no longer active and did NOT the TC who actually wound up teaching my class. (He was a real TC, and I verified that with the NRA, but he wasn't on the list for some reason).

In addition to getting the TC list from the NRA, ask around at local ranges and shops. Whenever you find a NRA Instructor, ask who his TC was and if he still has contact info. That's how I found my guy.

The instructor class is a in-person class, not a home study course.

The bulk of the class is learning how to teach adults and then about specifically learning how to teach people shooting skills. It's not about being an Olympic caliber shooter yourself.

They will give a simple skills test at the start of the class. When you find a TC ask what the requirements are for the skills test before you attend the class. If you are an experienced shooter, you should be fine.

I was just looking up courses and I can't believe the price of some of these classes. I hope they kiss you on the neck and make you feel pretty before taking your money. When I took the course it was sponsered by hunter ed so it was a little cheaper. Some of these morons are charging from $100 to $700 for the same class:scrutiny:. I would shop around a little bit to find out who is offering the class at the best price.

Hunter ed trained several people so we could have basic rifle and pistol marksmanship classes available to the public and a reasonable cost. We usually charge $25 for 4 hours or help at the range. We don't do one on one training but a bulk class of 10-15 students sometimes more.
