For a long time I refused to be a member of NRA because of all the high pressure soliciting, junk mail, and unwanted items that I was expected to send money for.
Several years ago I joined for a year so I could use a local range to zero in some new rifles. Before my membership card arrived I received a dvd that I had no use for along with a letter telling me to send money for it.
A phone call put a stop to any more coming.
In 2017, retired, it occurred to me that I would be able to use the local range during the week when few if any other shooters would be around so I joined the club and NRA again. Surprisingly, I have not received one single thing from NRA. Have they quit sending all the junk mail, is my request from years ago still being honored, or am I just incredibly lucky? For what it’s worth, I opted out of both magazines as well.

I just ignore all the stuff I have no use for. They still beg for money and have special prices at times for signing up for membership. The only time I pay any attention to anything they want is when I have to renew my membership.

Life member, get the rifleman mag to read in the library and on occasion a letter from the local NRA association. But I get so much junk mail from insurance companies, veteran associations, hearing aid companies (being retired they think we are all deaf), etc., that the one or two letters every six months is meaningless.

The biggest complaint I hear about NRA membership is the request for a donation. I really don't understand why people get upset over solicitations, just throw them in the trash! I donate when I feel like it and when I don't, it goes in the round file. The NRA and all the other organizations rely on donations to continue operations so naturally they send out solicitations. It isn't like they have a vendetta against you and target your mailbox with solicitations.

The NRA gets donations from every mailing. People donate at different times for different reasons. Perhaps just their mood that day.
This method of donation request works for the NRA. They fully expect that oft times the mailing will hit the circular file along with the hearing aid ad.
Most mail hits the bin everyday.

Years ago I emailed them and told them that if I received any more marketing emails, unsolicited items being sent to me, or begging and pleading mailings, that I would no longer renew my membership. I only ever get a mailing now about renewing my membership when it's close to expiring.

I'm guessing you are on their do not contact list, and they are still honoring that request.

I get upset because one, it's wasting paper and natural resources, and two, they are spending my membership dues to print junk mail. I was receiving three or four mailings a month asking for more money. That's too much. Quarterly, maybe even every other month is reasonable. Three or four per month? How much did they spend printing and mailing all that crap out? I'm guessing millions in the long run.

Folks who worked for the NRA have told me that despite what seems like a wasted expense, they make money on the bulk mailings.
Next, as pointed out, you can stop them.
Given the uproar and financial problems, one can expect more solicitations.
Finally, since the points are made are made and to avoid another Manichean brouhaha over the NRA, this one is closed as previously decided by staff.
