Yes that's a fact of life with the NRA but it's still the prime organization that's supporting our cause.

Now what?

Well Mike, be prepared for a deluge of junk mail from them, many times a week, asking for more money hidden in various disguises!!

And every so often, they will send you postcards for you to forward to your reps to support a good cause. Those are worthwhile! The rest of their stuff you can immediately store in the circular file.

Apparently the NRA needs your money to fund their junk mail campaign so they can solicit more money for their junk mail campaign....
so they can solicit more money for their junk mail campaign....
so they can solicit more money for their junk mail campaign.... ? !
:p

Moparmike...

Congratulations on the new membership.

Yeah, the NRA does send out a lot of solicitations. You can either get mad at them for trying or you can simply get rid of it and send money when you can.

The fact of the matter is the NRA is still the organization which does the most to support our continuing fight on the national level. If you think that they can do it on a shoestring, try looking at what George Soros and some of the "anti-gun" foundations pour into the opposition.

A person can do one of three things (or any combination thereof):

1. Give money to those who fight for us.

2. Donate your time and personal efforts towards fighting bad laws and anti-gun efforts.

3. Sit back and be an arm-chair quarterback and criticize what is going on.

I thank you for joining the NRA, now I ask that you help continue the fight.

Yeah-it bugs the snot out of me that the NRA deluges members and non-members alike with their junk mail campaign. Yeah-it's seemingly not efficient and a waste of money. I've often wondered how much money is spent on the junk mail campaigns-probably more than the entire budgets of the other pro 2A groups combined. When I first became an NRA member I wrote them and called complaining about these mass mailings, and got a reply indicating that the cost to benefit ratio was actually quite good. I hate junk mail period and do wish the NRA wouldn't send so much. I have refused to give them my e-mail address for obvious reasons.

Call and ask them to knock off the junk mail. You will still get a lot of early re-up notices, but a lot fewer of the shrill "the sky is falling, send money now!" letters. Most months, all I get is the magazine.

Any gun owner that doesn't belong to the NRA is an idiot....even Bill Clinton said the reason Al Gore lost the last election was because of the NRA and its members.................

You will get a lot more mail from the NRA asking for money; but as others noted - if you ask them to knock off the junk mail, they usually will. It can sometimes take a few requests to get the NRA to do anything as they are not particularly efficient.

Another thing to remember is that your $35 only funds the safety, shooter education and competition purposes of the NRA. That money isn't used for political purposes - if you want to arm the NRA to fight for you in DC, you can send what money you can spare to the NRA-ILA (lobbying Congress) or the NRA-PVF (donates money to reelect pro-RKBA candidates).

You also don't need to feel like you should reply to every request for money from any of these organizations. Send what you can spare when you can spare it and ignore the desperate pleading tone (which goes unchanged month to month). If you send $30 to either one of the political groups once a year, you'll have donated more than the average member did about 10x over.

Congrats on joining the NRA. Just keep in mind that if you look around online, you can join for $25. I originally did join for the usual $35, but I found a couple places online where I could join for 10 bucks less. Surf on Google for 5 minutes and I'm sure you'll find it.

To emphasize Bart's comments

This is 100% true. You should ALL realize that the Democrats passed a law that prevented organizations like the NRA from using your dues for political lobbying. Your donations, above and beyond your dues, are what allow for political lobbying.

A typical response rate to a letter campaign is maybe 1%. One percent of 4 million people is 40,000. If those 40K people give 20 bucks apiece, I think your mailing and printing costs are way more than covered. These ain't big colorful glossy brochures that cost $4 each to print you know. I am sure it's a good return on the investment. But I understand the desire to get rid of junk mail!

Congratulations!

I got lots of mail when I was an annual member. Once I became a Life Member I hardly get any requests for cash anymore. I'm not complaining. Maybe they figured they got enough out of me for awhile. I think they are a good organization. Not perfect but better than nothing.

I did get a call from someone who said they were NRA a month or so ago. They were calling me by the wrong name. I didn't bother to correct them and they never figured it out. They had me listen to a recorded pitch from Wayne LaPierre about the UN coming to take my guns and could I send some cash. I was un-employed at the time so I said no. They said thank you Mr. Rucker. Rucker is not now, nor has it ever been my last name. I think they were just cold calling. You would think if they had a membership list they would know my name.

Joining the NRA is not the same as subscribing to a magazine. You do get a magazine, but the whole point in joining is to support the efforts of the NRA in protecting and perpetuating our rights and way of life. You should be sending extra money rather than trying to send less.
