"It started out as an invitation only deal but I don't think they lured in the top 400 shooters from around the world..."

This excerpt from the rules might be why:

Firearms & Ammunition Are Provided: Shooters will not bring or use their firearms in this match. All firearms and ammunition are appropriate for the courses of fire and will be provided.

That was part of draw, or that's what they thought. I considered it but not for $500.

Yeah free guns and ammo is why I'm going. I doubt very many folks have all the guns and gear necessary to shoot every one of the disciplines that will be tested.

Might be mistaken, but since top shooters are sponsored one way or another (guns, ammo, clothing, travel, match fees...) they would likely prefer not entering a competition that has the following potential downsides:

- strange & unspecified guns & ammo (these guys/gals are hyper-trained on the bio-mechanics of their own gear, including gun specific holsters).

- competition has no track record w.r.t. rules interpretation and officiating (too easy to inadvertently commit faults, FTDRs or whatever).

- risk of losing to an unknown, non-ranked shooter (loss of prestige, embarrassment to sponsor).

The downsides outweigh the upsides.
They'll probably miss out on a lot of fun though.

There isn't even close to 40 shooters that are sponsored to the point of everything being free.

I get a lot of free stuff but i still lose $5-10,000 a year on my hobby.

Check out this spreadsheet I did on costs of being a pro.

I do agree with you that I would much rather shoot my own guns and gear that I train with. I hate it when 3-gun matches force you to use a sponsors prop gun on the clock in a match.
