I received this in the mail today. This is how it reads:

Dear Fellow American,

For years, the NRA has asked patriotic Americans like you to join our cause.

Today, I'm sending out this "Final Notice" to gun owners and freedom-loving Americans across the country to let you know that time is running out - unless you act now, your Second Amendment rights are certain to be dismantled and destroyed.

Continuing on a few paragraphs later...

Right now, gun-ban politicians in the US Congress are casting votes, passing laws, and writing regulations that will decide the fate of your right to own a firearm.

Gun-ban politicians like Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein stand ready to fight for a far-reaching anti-gun agenda that will FORCE you to register your guns, LIMIT the number of guns you can own, BAN rifle ammunition, BAN personal protection handguns, and even REQUIRE you to apply for a federal "arsenal" license for guns you own
.

What exactly does this letter mean by "Final Notice"? Is the NRA implying that if I don't send them money soon, they will no longer be sending me letters in the future looking for money... or do they mean something else?

Are these letters slightly over-exagerated for current times? I understand there is an anti-gun movement active in America, however, I don't think we're one or two steps away from what once happened in the 1930's.

For a second, I was wondering, based on your title, how you got into debt with the NRA.

I take it you're bailing. Don't let a little scaremongering stop you. But do send that membership money somewhere else it'll get used.

They chap my rear end.

I got one today saying my membership would expire before the 11-08 elections.
And they would send me a free pocket-knife if I would send in my dues immeadiatly.

Problem is, I sent in my dues two months ago, already have my new card that expires in 2009, and I didn't get a free knife for renewing early!

Then I get another packet of info every other week from the NRA-ILA begging for a donation because they need more money to continue the good fight.
Then on on odd weeks, I get NRA life insurance and credit card junk mail.

If they would cut out all the junk mail, they wouldn't need so many donations to keep up the good fight!

Let's all resign from the NRA at once, then let's all vote for Hillary Clinton in the next election. That would send everyone a big message for sure I betcha. It wouldl show them exactly who we are and who they're dealing with, just in case they don't know already.

I used to like the NRA but they keep asking me for money to defend my Second Amendment rights. What gall! It says right there in black-and-white that I already have them rights, so the NRA ain't doing nothing for me.

And besides that I don't like all them hunting guns in the magazine and I don't like all them tactical guns in the magazine and I don't like the rifles or the handguns or the muzzleloaders or the shotguns or any of that other stuff either. If they don't print pictures of the guns I like--none of that other stuff--they don't represent me.

And besides that they're the biggest gun control organization in the world, which is why the anti gun people want to kill the NRA, which proves that the NRA is anti gun.

And besides that they send me those videos and ask me to pay for them. If I want videos I'll go to Blockbuster and rent me some gooduns.

And besides that the NRA passed the NFA law back in '34 and the FOPA back in '86 and they started the Civilian War back long ago. And they don't let me buy machinery guns neither so they're worthless trash.

And besides that if Wayne LaPierre wants to defend my rights he can dig into his own pocket instead of asking me for money. The nerve of that guy. He wears a suit.

I buy ammunition with my hardearned money and I belong to my local Jolly Boys Group, and some day I'm going to send those boys a buck or two. They don't like the NRA neither.

Don't need no NRA.

Why don't the NRA do something about those people who want to take away my guns!

That's why I don't belong to the NRA and why I'm voting for Hillary in the next election. That'll show them for sure.

:p

Ditto to the first 3 posts... the heck with the sarcastic one above me.

I'm letting my membership expire too.

The NRA is the Giuliani of pro-gun movements.

If you don't like all the mail you get from the NRA all you have to do is this (from the NRA website FAQ):

Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?
A: Simply email us at [email protected] or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.

This process is completely painless and takes about 5 minutes. I got tired of all the mailings and sent them an email. About a week later all the extra mailings stopped. I still plan on having a little extra $$ go to the NRA-ILA, I just think they can save the postage for someone else.

Who is the NRA endorsing in the Republican Presidential primary? This will influence whether I decide to re-join them again. If they're going to endorse ANYONE they will need to get on the ball and do it soon, primaries are going to be starting in less than 60 days.

Just join but give a false address so they won't send you garbage.

Who is the NRA endorsing in the Republican Presidential primary?

No kidding. If they go for young Caesar I don't think they can show their faces again.

Good for you, azredhawk44. I wrote the message you think is "sarcastic," but I'm glad that you're taking it seriously. Nobody is trying to take our guns away. That's only a scare tactic used by the NRA to get money.

The NRA is ruthless in its scare tactics and won't stop at anything.

As we know, Mayor C. Ray Nagin of New Orleans did not order the confiscation of guns from honest citizens during the Katrina hurricane in 2005. In fact there was no Hurricane Katrina. It was all a media event staged by the NRA as a fund raising device. There also is no Louisiana and never was a New Orleans. Who would name a state after someone named "Louise"? And there couldn't be any New Orleans because there never was an Orleans. And, besides, if there had been an Orleans why did they need a new one? What was wrong with the old one?

The NRA keeps trying to tell us that the District of Columbia doesn't allow people to carry or even own handguns, and if they have rifles or shotguns at home they must have permits and need to keep the guns disassembled. Nonsense. We've all seen pictures of the guys in suits standing around the President and those guys have guns. Besides, the District of Columbia is the murder capitol of the U.S. so nobody would live there if they couldn't protect themselves.

Despite what the NRA tries to make us believe, there is no "Brady Campaign." There was a "Brady Bunch" but it has been off the air for years except in reruns, and Susan Dey who was a cute blonde teenager then grew up to be a knockout who became a lawyer on another show and she never tried to take away anyone's gun.

It's all a fiction created by the NRA. We know how to read the Second Amendment and it plainly says that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not have fringes. That plain, unadorned statement was good enough for my daddy and it's good enough for me.

I have better uses for the $35 a year the NRA wants from me to be a member. For that money I can get a couple boxes of ammo and a hamburger. I am not going to be pushed around by the National Restaurant Association no matter how many times they try to scare me. Nobody can put one over on me. I am a gun owner.

Important: Don't listen to those guys who tell you how to get off the NRA mailing list. If you do that you won't get any fundraising requests from the NRA and you won't be able to complain about getting them. Then you won't be able to complain about getting them, and all you'll be able to complain about is stuff like the NFA Act of 1934, the FOPA of 1964, Wayne LaPierre's salary, and the NRA's refusal to do what you want it to do. Of course you can still say that the NRA is the world's biggest gun control organization and that it is responsible for Hurricane Katrina, except that there wasn't a Hurricane Katrina. Doesn't matter to a real gun owner though.

Yes, let's all quit the NRA and send our money to someone that will REALLY use it...... GOA.

Last I checked they were spending their membership money bashing the NRA.

Now THAT is what I call PROGRESS!

Plus the NRA sends out all that mail, and between carrying my beer, my gut, and my ego around with me all day it's just too much of a burden to carry that envelope full of paper to the trash can.....

Do any of you people belong to other lobbying groups? Clearly not or you'd know that this is how it works.

It's 35 bucks a year, good God.

If 35 bucks to GOA, NRA, and SAF is too much of a financial burden on you then you probably shouldn't own a gun; sell them and buy your family a cheeseburger or pay the rent or something.......

90 percent of these posts are because someone doesn't like getting mail? You gotta be kidding me.........
Does your postman have BO or something?

If they would cut out all the junk mail, they wouldn't need so many donations to keep up the good fight!
Actually, selling access to their member list is a profit center for them, not a cost. In fact, they probably don't send the mail themselves at all, just sell the list to the vendor whose dead-tree spam you're receiving.

"They chap my rear end."

Well, rub some lotion on it. There are real problems out there that need dealing with.

You know,
AIG{ the preferred insurance company for the NRA} sent me info on how to "save " on my auto insurance. Just for kicks I called{ because if I could save a few bucks and support the group I have a life membership to...cool}
and was quoted a price that was over $1,000 per year more than I pay now.
I politely declined and the salesperson could not understand why I would not switch:what:

Anyway, about a month later I got a letter from them{AIG} on their NRA letterhead stating that they did not know why I chose not to spend over $1,000 a year more than I pay now but I had ONE LAST CHANCE to take their "deal".

Just seems like the NRA and all affiliated with them use the same tactics to get $$$ from you.

I will make a deal since I had a minor dispute with Robert Hairless in another thread...

If the Republican nominee is Romney or Rudy, against Hilary or Obamasama, and the NRA says, "Okay, the country is officially screwed 7 ways to Sunday, go buy guns and get ready for the storm, there is no one to vote for this time around," I will join the NRA. In fact, I will get a lifetime membership.

Is that a fair deal? I think so.

If they tell us they are backing Giuliani or Romney, even because its "the lesser of two evils," then I will make it my mission to destroy the NRA.

Histrionics and breathless hyperbole are tiresome, but I suppose that's the nature of fund raising - they're certainly not unique in that regard. I tend to send what ILA donations I can muster tied to their less breathless announcements of ultimate banning doom in the perhaps forlorn hope that they'll percieve a pattern and act on it.

I've yet to invoke the "do not promote" option but I did upgrade my membership to "benefactor". This seems to have reduced the number of solicitations I recieve pushing me to upgrade my membership.
