number of pre-ban weapons in circulation?

Sorry for the dumb question, but does anyone have an estimate/source on how many pre-ban weapons are in circulation? I did some search, but the only answer I got was a vague "millions."

The question is rather hard to answer because the Federal ban sunset in '04, so now there are bans only in a few restrictive states. Which attributes determine if a weapon is banned or not vary amongst those states as well, further muddying the issue.
