What is Rep. Jon Porter (R) thinking?

He acts pro-gun one day... but then we find him doing Sarah Brady's
bidding the next.

Jon Porter's name appeared as an original cosponsor on a pro-gun
piece of legislation last month. That bill was H.R. 3193, a bill to
repeal the gun ban in Washington, D.C.

But now he's told the chief sponsor of the bill, Rep. Mark Souder
(R-IN), that he wants his name to be taken off of the legislation.

What's his problem? Doesn't Rep. Porter support the right of D.C.
residents to own firearms and use them in self-defense?

This recent action taken by Rep. Porter is totally outrageous. Is
he coming under pressure from the Brady Bunch? Is he now trying to
please people on both sides of this issue?

H.R. 3193 is a bill that is desperately needed for the citizens in
our nation's capital. The D.C. gun ban not only denies people their
constitutional rights, it has failed to cut crime. In eight of the
last nine years, Washington, D.C. has earned the dubious distinction
of being the nation's Murder Capital -- despite this city having
imposed some of the most draconian gun restrictions in the country!

Washington, D.C. was never the nation's leader in crime until the
city passed its notorious gun ban in 1976. Before this time, their
murder rate used to be comparatively low. But all that changed
after D.C. officials began telling criminals they would have a safer
working environment in the homes of unarmed citizens.

REP. PORTER'S WITHDRAWAL FROM THIS BILL MAKES US WONDER WHERE HE
TRULY STANDS ON SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS!!!

For the record, Porter has also failed to cosponsor pro-gun bills
allowing Nevadans to carry firearms out-of-state (H.R. 990) or
authorizing cargo pilots to carry firearms while on duty
(H.R. 1049). The latter bill would close a "cockpit loophole" which
currently allows only passenger aircraft pilots to carry guns.

ACTION: Please contact Rep. Porter right away and ask him to explain
his flip-flop. Urge him to place his name back on the D.C. gun ban
repeal and to stand for the Second Amendment rights of ALL
Americans.

You can reach Representative Jon Porter at the following numbers:

Washington, DC Henderson, NV
Phone: 202-225-3252 Phone: 702-387-4941
Fax: 202-225-2185 Fax: 702-434-1378

E-mail contact for Porter is available to those who live in the 3rd
District ONLY. Such constituents can go to
http://www.house.gov/writerep/ to copy-and-paste the pre-written
message below as an e-mail message. (Rep. Porter, for some reason,
steadfastly refuses to accept e-mail from Nevadans who aren't
specifically within his district.)

------ Pre-written message ------

Dear Rep. Porter:

Gun Owners of America has informed me that you have withdrawn your
name from H.R. 3193, a bill to repeal the gun ban in
Washington, D.C.

I would appreciate an explanation as to why you have done this. Was
there a mistake in putting your name on the bill in the first place?
Even so, why would you object to cosponsoring this pro-gun bill?

Don't the citizens of Washington, D.C. deserve to enjoy the rights
protected by the Second Amendment to our Constitution?

The D.C. gun ban not only denies people their right to keep and bear
arms, it has failed to cut crime. In eight of the last nine years,
Washington, D.C. has earned the dubious distinction of being the
nation's Murder Capital -- despite this city having imposed some of
the most draconian gun restrictions in the country!

Residents of, and visitors to, the District should not walk the
streets in fear. H.R. 3193 would bring an end to the "safe working
environment" that criminals now enjoy and allow citizens to once
again own firearms in the capital of this great nation of ours.

Please let me know what you intend to do.

Sincerely,
