I am interested in going small game hunting for the first time this fall but I am confused by the DEC rules regarding what kind of gun I am allowed to use.

Under "General Regulations" it says that any rifle other than .22 rimfire has to have a capacity of 6 or fewer rounds, while in the furbearer section it says that any rifle can be used. Considering the fact that I'll be using an AR-15 of some sort (Which I don't own yet) for small game hunting (furbearer and squirrel, rabbit and stuff), does this mean I should stock up on 5 round mags?
Does furbearer hunting encompass all of small game hunting thus making any mag legal? Also, I would like to have a pair of 30 rounders just to cover my back while I am out in the boonies. Does having the large capacity mags on me, without them being in the gun, mean that I am breaking the law?

This also brings up a bigger issue for me, what are the laws pertaining to carrying a rifle or shotgun on a camping trip. Is a rifle subject to the same laws if you are not planning on shooting anything?

edited to make it clear I dont own an AR yet.

I HOPE you don't have an AR-15 in NYC.....and if you do you SHOULD NOT post it on the internet.
For that matter....... NO MAGS over 5 rounds!....WAKE UP!
LEARN THE LAWS AND SAVE YOURSELF ALOT OF TROUBLE!!!!!!

Forgive me if I'm jumping to conclusions, but from what you wrote it doesn't sound kosher.

Thanks for the heads up, I don't own an AR. They're not allowed at all in NYC even with the long gun permit?

First move out of the city. Second when hunting only carry 5 rd mags. I am usually armed when in the woods but it's really for things like feral dogs or animals with rabies. Unlike the city we do not have bad guys behind every tree here in the Catskill mtns. In the woods ranges will be short so a 22rf will be all you need. A 223 would be suitable for chucks or coyotes.
