Hello, It's GunBlazer1 the Firearms newbie, I was wondering if anyone here knew about the laws for new york. Here is my question

Q1: Can I (at 15) walk around my front yard with a gun and own a gun as long as my parents supply the firearm and ammo? (metaphorically spoken)

Q2: Can I (At 18) walk around my front yard with a handgun as long as my guardians provide ammo for the gun? (Also own)

In New York State you can possess a rifle or shotgun with your parents' permission and under their supervision. If you are in a very rural and mountainous area carrying a long gun should not be a problem as long as you aren't intoxicated, disorderly or otherwise threatening. The further upstate you go the better things are when it comes to firearms generally speaking. You should speak to the county Sheriff and ask for his guidance.

You cannot own or possess a handgun until your twenty first birthday. The only exception is if you are shooting with a pistol license holder. There was a time, within the last ten years, when people in their teens could be issued a pistol license but Governor Pataki changed the law. Possessing a handgun except in the most dire circumstances (for instance, picking up a wounded deputy's service weapon to fire on his assailant) will expose you to felony firearms charges under NYS Penal Law ART 265. These charges carry a maximum of 15 years in maximum security prison and a mandatory minimum period of incarceration.

As with all advice I am not a lawyer. When in doubt consult one along with the local authorities.

Sounds like PO2010 is an LEO and speaks with knowledge.

I say NO to your requests and if in doubt PLEASE call and get the real skinny from the guy/gal that would prosecute you = the District Attorney of your county.

The police might arrest you [ by mistake ] but its the D.A. that will either drop the charges or send it to the Grand Jury.

So ask them and then GET IT IN WRITING.

My 00.02 cents s'all.
