You don't need to do anything but fill out an amendment form. NOTE: A Semi-Automatic Rifle License is required to purchase and take possession of a semiautomatic rifle on or after September 4, 2022. Semi-Automatic Rifles purchased before september 4, 2022, do not need to be registered or listed on your permit.

Yeah I wonder if gun stores will go the pistol route and say you can't pick the rifle up until it's on your permit.

All one needs is the Semi-auto endorsement. It is a one-time thing. Once the endorsement is on the permit, a semi-auto rifle can be purchased without further permit paperwork. Of course, the normal (4473 ) must be filled out and the NICS check done.
