HEADLINE: SHERIFF DOING A DISSERVICE IN FAILURE TO PROCESS GUN PERMITS

BODY:
Niagara County Sheriff Thomas Beilein has taken action that places citizens of Niagara County in mortal danger.

Sheriff Beilein, according to the Buffalo News, has placed "an indefinite hold on the processing of pistol permits." Beilein said, "Individuals seeking to obtain pistol permits can expect the waiting period to increase substantially. Due to staff shortages we have been unable to process a pistol permit application since October, and there are no immediate plans to begin that process." Note that no exceptions are noted. If no applications truly were processed that means that several people with valid personal protection needs are at mortal risk here in Niagara County. We can only pray that no one looses his or her life or is injured because Sheriff Beilein choose to keep something else in the budget and eliminate the processing pistol permits. The only functions the Sheriff's Department performs on pistol permit applications are the processing of paperwork for the FBI background check and the taking of fingerprints. It would be sad indeed if someone were to die for the lack of some paperwork and a set of fingerprints.

Citizens of Niagara County are blessed with a county clerk and Pistol Permit judge who are very fair and quite prompt in the administration of their duties. It is a sad thing to see the sheriff lay waste to all the hard work done by the judge and county clerk personnel when he could have made the necessary cut somewhere else in his budget and continued processing permit applications.

Don't let this unacceptable situation continue. Someone has been waiting since October for a personal protection permit because Sheriff Beilein made a bad choice. The Sheriff answers to the County Legislature. Contact your legislator and ask him or her why the sheriff is being allowed to place our citizens in mortal danger.

The sheriff has been specifically directed to eliminate certain items from his budget in the past. Couldn't the Legislature insist that the potentially life-saving function of processing pistol permits be performed? Please act on this today, before someone is killed or injured because the anti-Second Amendment Niagara County sheriff chooses to barricade processing of their pistol permit.

It would be interesting to know if the sheriff was just up for reelection and if he made his little announcement before or after the first Tuesday in Nov. I guess the timing of the announcement would depend on which group he was pandering to.

Yet another situation where it is sad that tar and feathering has gone out of fashion.

All you have to do, Bill Urtel, is get an applicant to hie on down to the county clerk and file a Writ of Mandamus against the Sheriff. He'll have to explain to the judge why he's not doing his public duty. Get a gunnie lawyer to do it pro bono.

Read it carefully...hes looking for money.."staff shortages"

Whos the most vocal group to help him..???

By the way Blackhawk NY has abolished Mandamus..its called an Article 78 now :):D
