At Columbia, Students Attack Minuteman Founder

BY ELIANA JOHNSON - Staff Reporter of the Sun

Students stormed the stage at Columbia University's Roone auditorium yesterday, knocking over chairs and tables and attacking Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the Minutemen, a group that patrols the border between America and Mexico.

Mr. Gilchrist and Marvin Stewart, another member of his group, were in the process of giving a speech at the invitation of the Columbia College Republicans. They were escorted off the stage unharmed and exited the auditorium by a back door.

Having wreaked havoc onstage, the students unrolled a banner that read, in both Arabic and English, "No one is ever illegal." As security guards closed the curtains and began escorting people from the auditorium, the students jumped from the stage, pumping their fists, chanting victoriously, "Si se pudo, si se pudo," Spanish for "Yes we could!"

The Minuteman Project, an organization of volunteers founded in 2004 by Mr. Gilchrist, aims to keep illegal immigrants out of America by alerting law enforcement officials when they attempt to cross the border. The group uses fiery language and unorthodox tactics to advance its platform. "Future generations will inherit a tangle of rancorous, unassimilated, squabbling cultures with no common bond to hold them together, and a certain guarantee of the death of this nation as a harmonious ‘melting pot,'" the group's Web site warns.

The pandemonium that ensued as the evening's keynote speaker took the stage was merely the climax of protest that brewed all week. A number of campus groups, including the Chicano caucus, the African-American student organization, and the International Socialist organization, began planning their protests early this week when they heard that the Minutemen would be arriving on campus.

The student protesters, who attended the event clad in white as a sign of dissent, booed and shouted the speakers down throughout. They interrupted Mr. Stewart, who is African-American, when he referred to the Declaration of Independence's self-evident truth that "All men are created equal," calling him a racist, a sellout, and a black white supremacist.

A student's demand that Mr. Stewart speak in Spanish elicited thundering applause and brought the protesters to their feet. The protesters remained standing, turned their backs on Mr. Stewart for the remainder of his remarks, and drowned him out by chanting, "Wrap it up, wrap it up!" Mr. Stewart appeared unfazed by their behavior. He simply smiled and bellowed, "No wonder you don't know what you're talking about."

"These are racist individuals heading a project that terrorizes immigrants on the U.S.-Mexican border," Ryan Fukumori, a Columbia junior who took part in the protest, told The New York Sun. "They have no right to be able to speak here."

The student protesters "rush to vindicate themselves with monikers like ‘liberal' and ‘open-minded,' but their actions, their attempt to condemn the Minutemen without even hearing what they have to say, speak otherwise," the president of the Columbia College Republicans, Chris Kulawik, said. On campus, the Republicans' flyers advertising the event were defaced and torn down.

The College Republicans expressed their concern about the lack of free speech for opposing viewpoints on the Columbia campus in the wake of the evening's events. "We've often feared that there's not freedom of speech at Columbia for more right-wing views — and that was proven tonight," the executive director of the Columbia College Republicans, Lauren Steinberg, said.

The Minutemen's arrival at Columbia drew protesters from around the city as well. An hour before Messrs. Stewart and Mr. Gilchrist took the stage, rowdy protests began outside the auditorium on Broadway, where activists chanted, "Hey, hey, ho, ho, the Minutemen have got to go!"

Thugs ATTACKING him for speaking?

So when's it going to be time to put them down by force? Banners in English and Arabic? Chanting in Spanish? To put it quite simply...***?!!!

Sounds like these losers are, well, just that. I wonder if they would be interested in illegally emmigrating to Saudi or Mexico?

The simple fact is that "liberals", "progressives", and many Democrats just do not believe in freedom of speach (unless you're insulting whites, Christians and/or Republicans).

...the African-American student organization, and the International Socialist organization...

My question is this: what do any of those groups have ANYTHING to do with immigration? the Chicano caucus I can kind of understand, but the other 2?

"These are racist individuals heading a project that terrorizes immigrants on the U.S.-Mexican border," Ryan Fukumori, a Columbia junior who took part in the protest, told The New York Sun. "They have no right to be able to speak here."

How is it racist? I don't recall seeing anything in their (the Minuteman Project) charter that any one race is being singled out. And why do they not have the right to speak there? Sounds like socialistic policy, read NAZI, in action.

Gotta love the educational system here! Stupid sheeple...:banghead:

I see, so because you disagree with an individual, they no longer deserve the First Amendment Right of Free Speech.

What a strong position you must have, that you cannot allow your ideas to be challenged verbaly. What lofty goals you must have when dissenters are put down by force.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

and a black white supremacist.
Are they serious? Was I supposed to laugh so hard at this? Almost as funny as Dave Chappelle's black-white supremacist character.:D

what makes me mad is that these people (liberals in general) don't live anywhere near the problem areas along the US mexico border. they have never had to deal with these problems first hand because they don't live here and are not affected by them. i know they would think differently and act and vote differently if they were living in lets say Laredo, Texas, or some other border town. i just want to throw up when i see these idiots who have no idea what they are fighting for or who the people they are defending are, walking up down the streets chanting and protesting about something so foreign to them.

i am frustrated, because many would consider this free speech. of course it's not...it's violent protest....uninformed violent protest at that. if there was ever a time for jack-booted thugs to stomp on heads, it would have been here. why aren't those that participated and organized being arrested?

<- ignorant college protestor...

NOTE: no college students were injured in this post. Not all college students are ignorant so settle down sparky...

why aren't those that participated and organized being arrested?
Because the ACLU would sue the people who ordered the arrest for violating their free speech. Then a bunch of smelly commie hippies would occupy the admin building until some more minority studies profs are hired. It is easier for the admin to just ignore this.

"They have no right to be able to speak here."

They really do think that the rights guarenteed by COTUS are merely privilages granted by government that can be taken away if they don't like how you are using them.

Makes me sick...

One more sign of our collapsing polity. Brownshirts are brownshirts, wherever you find them. This is nothing but terrorism. We've seen the same behavior in Europe and Latin America, where universities function as large ultra-leftist cells. One of these days, unfortunately, someone is really going to get seriously hurt--and then all bets will be off. What the academics, living out their violence vicariously through the protestors, fail to grasp is that they are bringing on everything they supposedly oppose. Unleash chaos and anarchy and you will be destroyed by chaos and anarchy. Universities seem to believe they are, and will remain, "fire-free zones" from which they can safely attack and pollute America. Personally, I think they are propelled by a death-wish. I find this whole situation utterly tragic.

From my point of view, their behavior isn't a problem, it's an opportunity. Violent people only understand violence - greater force.
Why didn't the cops deal with this. Were there no arrests?
Soon, the common man will grow tired of this double standard.

They have no right to be able to speak here

If they try to infringe upon the first, it may be time to exercise the second.

why doesnt the .gov ever try 'liberal minded minoritys' for violating the civil rights of others?

It would seem that by charging the stage they were acting in the same manner as the police in missisipi in 1964 who interfered with peacable protest.

I guess when they can't argue with your ideas, they insult your ethnicity, and when that is innefective they attack you with their fists.

here's a huge laugh. the university president is a 'nationally-recognized first amendment scholar'. what a pie in the face it must be to have members of your student body claiming that certain people do not have that right on his campus. if somebody discovers a way to contact him, let us know, as i would love to.

Stupid actions seldom further one's cause so I can't say I'm all that disappointed but it is somewhat disturbing.

idiots

been to many stupid rallies.

  • free mumia
  • save tookie williams
  • CA HRR 4477 (i forget what it was for, something about proving citizenship)

and many others.

at these there forms a sort of Carnival atmosphere where idiots who just want to get some group fun will mouth off and make an arse of themselves so they get lots of attention from girls, media later.

the TRULY sad thing is that each time they do something stupid it just reinforces the divisive perception between the cultures.

walk like a duck....

What we saw there was a bunch of useful idiots... I hate people who say the are "liberals" and "open minded". Sure you are, until your argument falls apart and you resort to personal attacks.

Many, if not most, of the radical leftists in colleges these days are filthy, filthy hipocrites:
"These are racist individuals heading a project that terrorizes immigrants on the U.S.-Mexican border," Ryan Fukumori, a Columbia junior who took part in the protest, told The New York Sun. "They have no right to be able to speak here."

They don't believe in freedoms; they believe in allowing only what they agree with, and they think shouting down and harassing people who disagree is 'free speech'.

Yes, quite unlike conservatives, who think that freedom of speech only applies to white Christian Republicans.

I can't agree with their comments of "they have no right to speak". Everyone has a right to speak. But I can appreciate the fact that they act on their feelings, rather than preaching to the choir on some webiste.

If it's that way in Arkansas, fine, but if you think that the rest of the country runs like that, perhaps you should travel.

Those who preach tolerance are often incapable of it themselves. The reason they oppose firearms ownership is because they know the dangers they would pose to society if they had firearms, and they assume everyone has an equal level of emotional/mental instability.
