NYC Vows to Continue Va. Gun Probes
Group to Protest New York Mayor Tonight With Gun Raffle

RICHMOND, May 17 -- New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's top law enforcement adviser vowed today the city will continue to target Virginia gun dealers, despite a high-profile protest against the mayor planned for tonight in Fairfax County.

John Feinblatt, the mayor's criminal justice coordinator, said in an interview that Bloomberg won't hesitate to expand New York's crime control efforts into Virginia when he suspects gun shops are selling weapons illegally.

"This isn't about gun control. This is about crime control," Feinblatt said. "This is not about New York versus some other part of the country. We are just going to do what it takes to keep New Yorkers safe and keep our police safe."

At 7:30 p.m. tonight, the Virginia Citizens Defense League plans to hold a "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway" at the Mason District Government Center in Annandale to protest New York's decision to sue seven Virginia gun dealers.

The city filed the lawsuits after it sent undercover agents into the stores to make straw purchases, where one person legally buys a gun for someone else. Feinblatt said New York police have traced weapons sold by those seven Virginia dealers to 137 crimes in the past eight years. Virginia is the top source of out-of-state guns used in New York crime, city officials said.

The defense league will hold a drawing for a semiautomatic pistol and hunting rifle in defiance of Bloomberg.

Feinblatt called the event "a publicity stunt and a joke."

"But for us," he added," it is no joking matter. It is deadly serious."

Philip Van Cleave, president of the league responded, "I consider our basic civil rights to be no joke and the right to be able to protect yourself is also a life and death situation."

Earlier this year, Virginia passed a law outlawing Bloomberg's gun stings in the state unless the agents are supervised by a state or federal law enforcement official.

"We have abided by the law in the past. We will abide by the law in the future, but we are not going to compromise our responsibility to keep our people safe," Feinblatt said.

He added, "Guns don't know borders" and "don't respect state lines" so the city won't hesitate to "go after people breaking the law in Virginia or another state."

I am confused as to why the Post keeps running comments from Van Cleave, the obviously deranged leader of the Citizens' Defense League. This is a guy whose mental illness makes him believe that he "must" carry a gun and all times and believes that the only way we will all be safe is if everyone has a gun. PEOPLE WITH GUNS KILL. When you read anything about Van Cleave it becomes apparent almost immediately that he is laboring under a serious mental illnes... the one in which his every waking moment is filled with dreams of being able to pull out his gun and kill another human being. It is clear that Virginia needs to impose a mental health requirement before anyone can get a permit to carry a concealed weapon and/or openly carry. STOP THE MADNESS.

You know, I've been to several VCDL meetings with hundreds in attendance, all were armed, and yet somehow nobody ever killed anybody, not even once. Isn't that just amazing?!?

Maybe Virginia should declare war on NYC.

Remember the spat between VA and NYC a few years back about NYC exporting its garbage to VA landfills? And something that Giuliani babbled about how VA benefits from NYC exporting its "culture?"

LOL.

Crap like this makes me hope the 'global warming' thing is real, then we will only have a problem with NYC, SF, and LA for a few more years!

I gave one of my pistols permission to visit New York, but it just sat there in the closet. Must be defective.

I just got home from the VCDL meeting, probably at least a hundred of us carrying and not one of those firearms went crazy.

zoom6zoom,
Noticed that did ya. All those guns and all of those people (some of whom disagreed with each other) and somehow everyone survived. Of course JackStraw3457 declined to show up in spite of my friendly invite.

Since you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about you can consider this a personal invitation to come down and meet some of the people you are blowing smoke about. I am absolutely certain (since I know a number of them) that they will greet you with considerably more civility and class than you display in your posts here.

zespectre - thanks for the invitation, but I will have to pass. The thought of being in a room with a group of people suffering from delusions grandeur is too frightening. If a truck drove by and backfired, 70 people would wind up being murdered by the assembled masses. if you believe you "need" to carry a gun every moment of the day, please consider professional help. it's never too late to enjoy good mental health

Hey, he's good for a laugh if nothing else.

Oh, thank God. I'm okay then, because I don't need to carry a gun every moment of the day.

I just "want" to.

If the AG of Virginia is willing to extradite Bloomberg & co, I'll gladly chip in some cash for their plane tickets! :D

"Don't let your kids grow up to be gun nuts" Haha, that cracks me up!:D I wished my folks would've had that idea, at least my wallet would have been better off. Too late now though!

Okay, can someone explain....

....exactly what the NYC agents did? Did the dealers do anything illegal, ie KNOWINGLY sell firearms to straw purchaser? Did the two guys walk in together, act like they knew each other, then one asked questions and the other filled out the paperwork? Did they actually tell the dealer what they were doing? If so, then the dealer(s) broke the law.

But I don't think that is what happened because I don't see law suits going anywhere against the dealers. And you don't see Bloomberg coming out clearly saying that the dealers did this.

My guess is that the media is willingly going along with Bloomberg's BS high-publicity stunt. They are pretending that the gun dealers are guilty of knowingly doing straw purchases. My guess is that it was not made clear during the purchase that that was what was happening.

I think also that the dealers are just being attacked yet again for crimes committed with weapons bought at their store months or years later, for which of course the dealer is blameless. Correct me if I am wrong on any of this.

Partisan Ranger...
BINGO.
When Bloomberg was forced (by court order) to turn in his "evidence" he had NOTHING.

What he has is high profile and deep pockets so he can keep up his civil suits (note civil, NOT criminal) until the various dealers have to fold under the financial drain. Once they fold or settle they are, of course, assumed to be admitting guilt when what they are really admitting is bankruptcy.

BUT the court of Mass Media and the court of Public Opinion don't seem to care about "innocent until proven guilty" so the witch hunt continues.

Believe me, if evidence of wrongdoing was found the "turning on our own" that people saw with Zumbo would pale by comparison to what would happen to these dealers but for now they are still, in fact, innocent so the VCDL is trying to keep Bloomberg from simply running over them because he as more money behind his agenda.

That's what I thought. So often when you get behind the headline and the lede of these anti-gun stories, the whole thing falls apart. It amazes me that high-paid writers at the Post et al can get away with writing these stories, neglecting the point that 'straw purchase' is a term that could mean 100 different scenarios, many of which could seem perfectly legit to the average joe, such as, a husband and wife buying a gun -- the man talking, the woman doing the paperwork.

So, Bloomie, in the name of law and order, will send agents out of their jurisdiction to engage in a felony, despite being given the courtesy of a written warning by the Virginia AG.

The hypocrisy of Bloomie, who enjoys armed protection 24/7, is stunning.

Partisan Ranger, I think I answered your question in this thread:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=278156

If not, or if you have questions, please ask away.

Interesting to know that NY authorities are acting like Lemmings. Basically stating "we will do what we damn well please." That's fine, :D we have room in the prisons (remember no parole in VA either).

If not, I am willing to assist in building one.

Other states should send agents to NYC. Then, when they are approached on the streets by drug dealers, the state should sue NYC for nuisance. Many drugs from NYC make their way to rural states, resulting in an exportation of crime.

Bloomberg and NYC should be held accountable for the criminal activity which goes on day and night.

Maybe Virginia should declare war on NYC

basically happened about 150 years ago, didn't go so well for the south:D

Basically this is the glove slap preceeding the duel, now VA has to stand up to this illegal harrasment of honest buisnessmen, and reaffirm the fact that the mayor of NY does not rule the world. Serve a couple warrants, follow up with arrests, basically do what can be done to protect people from a rampaging billionare trying to buy an agenda that people won't vote for, and reps won't touch.

Arrest and convict. If there is anything illegal happening, that shouldn't be hard.

There's a poster in a gun shop here that says you get 10 years in the slammer for a straw purchase. Time to make good on that threat.

'Bloomberg Gun Giveaway' draws a crowd

'Bloomberg Gun Giveaway' draws a crowd

More than 200 people attended a gun giveaway last night at a Fairfax County government building despite last-minute legal questions raised by county and state officials.
Gun enthusiasts crowded into a conference room at the Mason District Government Center in Annandale, where the Virginia Citizens Defense League raffled off a pistol and rifle -- each valued at about $1,000 -- at its "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway."
New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a Republican, has argued that illegal gun sales in Virginia help perpetuate violent crime in New York.
Fairfax resident Jay Pinsky, who was the first winner, made an obscene hand gesture when asked what message he wanted to send Mr. Bloomberg.
Stephan Mayr of Arlington, the second winner, said he would like to tell Mr. Bloomberg, "Mind your own business." Both winners must undergo federal and state background checks before taking possession of the guns.
Dozens of people -- including members of the gun-rights group and anti-gun activists -- crowded the foyer and sidewalk outside after being unable to enter the conference room because of fire regulations.
Among the protesters were parents of Mary Karen Read and Reema Samaha, two local victims of the April 16 Virginia Tech shooting.
Peter and Cathy Read and Joseph Samaha held posters picturing their daughters, both freshmen, who were among 32 victims fatally shot by another student.
