NYPD Seeks Funds for Surveillance Cameras

By TOM HAYS, Associated Press Writer 36 minutes ago

NEW YORK - The nation's largest police force wants to install hundreds of surveillance cameras in busy commercial districts and other areas where there have been spikes in robberies and burglaries.

Police officers already watch live feeds from surveillance cameras in housing projects throughout the five boroughs, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

The new cameras, however, would not be monitored. Instead, they would record high-quality digital videos that would be reviewed in the event of a crime to look for evidence. Police also believe the cameras would serve as a deterrent.

Civil liberties groups argue the practice does more to encroach on the privacy of average citizens than it does to discourage and catch criminals.

Cameras "are no substitute for cops on the street," said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. "That's what we need to reduce crime."

But Browne said law-abiding New Yorkers would have nothing to fear.

"These are locations where there is no expectation of privacy," he said.

The police department is seeking city funds for some 400 new cameras. No detail was provided on a timetable or the cost of the plan.

Chicago has already installed a number of cameras, plan to have more, shift them around to high crime areas when needed.

Also read all about it in the newspaper that the newer cameras come equiped with microphones to localize where a bullet was fired from. Oh and by the way the microphones work is by using the "sonic boom" from the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

By the way how many handgun bullets are NOT supersonic ? Think about it

Haven't the cameras in England not stopped petty crime and simply pushed the problem elsewhere. Haven't criminals simply been wearing masks as well. Anyone have and data on this.

link to live cameras

There's no such thing. Even High Definition video is still about half the resolution of what you see at the local multiplex

what ? where? huh?

these cameras are basically the same as a DV recorder. high enough quality to see whats there. here=
OUrs aNNOY ME to no end. lots of intersections, tona and tons of money spent on basically nothing. the people get to look at them, maybe guess traffic conditions, many are offline. but the link is only to the STream to the Public, this is not the image they see at HQ. theyre decent cameras, capable of pulling your tag etc.
i dont like it, as a taxpayer its too expensive for too little. ultimately , i mena bank robbery, murder, it could be very useful- Jack bauer sure loves those camera feeds.....

a lot of the privately installed ones don't work, aren't switched on, face the wrong direction or have tapes that been recycled so many times that the picture quality is unuseable

Old school Judas Priest...more timely now than ever before

Up here in space
I’m looking down on you
My lasers trace
Everything you do

You think you’ve private lives
Think nothing of the kind
There is no true escape
I’m watching all the time

I’m made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I’m elected electric spy
I’m protected electric eye

Always in focus
You can’t feel my stare
I zoom into you
You don’t know I’m there

I take a pride in probing all your secret moves
My tearless retina takes pictures that can prove

I’m made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I’m elected electric spy
I’m protected electric eye

Electric eye, in the sky
Feel my stare, always there
There’s nothing you can do about it
Develop and expose
I feed upon your every thought
And so my power grows

I’m made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I’m elected electric spy
I’m protected electric eye

Protected. detective. electric eye
