First off let me apologize if this has been discussed on here before, I did use the search feature but didn't really find anything that answered my question. I am interested in getting my concealed carry permit, I have a pistol permit already. Does having a pistol permit make the process any faster? Do I go to the same place I got my pistol permit to apply for concealed carry permit? If a person has peace officer status will that make getting the concealed carry any easier? I've tried searching the web for some of this stuff but really haven't found anything exact. What exactly do the forms ask you when applying for the concealed carry? Sorry for all the questions I just dont know much about the whole concealed carry thing. Any other information other than this would be a big help as well. Thanks

Others can give you specifics but in NYS if you have a NYS pistol permit and it has no restrictions on it, it can be carried concealed without any other process needed.

You said you have a pistol permit...(I assume you mean a NYS permit...if you mean you have a permit from another state then you need to be a resident in NYS and go through the long process).

If you are not a resident then its a no-go

Make sure you read up on the places it is restricted...schools, federal buildings, post-offices...etc.

This does not include NYC which is a whole different ball game

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought Law Enforcement could carry concealed in any state. I know there are some issues with situations like if you are part of an auxillary force with limited police powers but there should be no problem if you're full time.

Yes, that is correct. Look up "H.R. 218" for all the info on that.

You probably can't find any exact answers because every county in NY State has it's own standards and every issuing judge is different.

All NY State permits are technically "concealed" because NY does not have an open carry law, so anytime you take it to the range or wherever it's not supposed to be seen by the general public.

I'm assuming that you already have a NY State pistol permit with the "hunting, camping, hiking, etc." restrictions on it, but I think what you are looking for is an "Unrestricted" permit. It depends on your county but some judges will remove the restrictions if you write a letter to try and get it amended, but it all depends on the judge. Having your permit for 'x' number of years and/or training may sway the judge to remove the restrictions. Sometimes a judge rarely removes them for any reason.

Just as a hypothetical example, in one county having your permit with restrictions for 2 years and then applying for an amendment to remove the restrictions may be enough for it to be approved. However, in another county even being a peace officer may not allow you to be 'worthy' enough for an unrestricted license (or the judge might just say that you can carry under your badge so you don't 'need' an unrestricted.)

NY laws are very complicated, and the pistol permit licensing is basically under control of the appointed judge for that county... so it may be drastically different in each case, and New York City is a whole other even more restrictive set of laws different from the rest of the state.

Thanks all...even though peace officers can carry on their job's "credentials" I wanted to be able to carry on my own. While I was out today I took my permit down to the county clerk where it was issued, it is indeed a concealed carry permit. The clerk said that the county has two types: possess and carry. Possess means it stays in the home, whereas carry means its pretty much unrestricted and includes concealed carry. I wish NY had laws that were black and white not gray...too much confusion. Thanks again for the help.
