I've looking around at safari rifles lately and one gun that really was interesting to me was the BRNO STOPPER express double rifle. It is a marvelous looking gun and for a very decent price considering it's a double rifle. The thing that interested me the most was that it is a O/U style double. Has anyone seen any other O/U safari rifles? I would be very interested in those rifles.

Just about all the big name european makers (Chapuis, Krieghoff, Blaser, Heym ect..) make 0/U DR's, and they cost less to produce that a S&S... (but still not inexpensive) Anyway, Valmet made some decent 0/U DR's, but the biggest cartridge they chambered is 9.3x74R.

The 9.3X74R is nothing to sneeze at, very close to being a metric equivalent of the .375 H&H. I have been shooting a Valmet for quite a few years.

At least with standard factory loads the 9.3x74mmR isn't even close to the .375H&H...which isn't to say that it is a bad cartridge in any way. It is virtually the equivalent of the 9.3x62mmMauser or .35Whelen...both great cartridges...but neither one that I would choose for any game larger than Kodiak (which isn't exactly a powder puff species). I believe you may have the 74mmR confused with the 9.3x64mmBrenneke which is on the heels of the venerable .375H&H, perfectly suitable for very large/dangerous game (though a little on the light side for Elephant), and will fit in a standard length action.

The 9.3x74R's will do anything the 375H&H will do at closer ranges...

Although i did design and sell some bigger rimmed cartridges for the Valmet 412's,

the one that i like best, and designed last, is a "improved" design for the 74R chambers,

You can still fire the factory 74R, or reload them to the imp. velocities.

I no longer do work like this, or sell anything to do with guns, i just thought i'd show them to you.

I'd pass on the BRNO...

The whole point of double rifles is for use on dangerous game: you have two separate locks (trigger mechanisms) attached to two separate barrels--it actually is having two separate rifles in your hands. If, at the moment of truth, your trigger picks that exact moment to break, well, you are already holding your spare rifle, right there. Pull the trigger.

The BRNO has a single trigger, so personally I'd see that as a weak spot.

The side-lock doubles are particularly cool, in that the entire trigger mechanism was attached to the side plate on each side. Order the rifle with two extra side plates, and--back in the day--if it broke in the middle of your safari, you could just drop in a new lock work, instead of having to ship it to Nairobi--or England--and use a different rifle.

...but it doesn't. The shape of the trigger-guard just makes it appear (from a distance) that it does.

Most O/U DR's max out at 9.3x74R in terms of power level. Check out the forums over at accurate reloading and nitro express. Lots of DR info. Be advised you are head towards expensive waters. Chapius UGEX in 9.3x74R start at about $4,600.00 and go up exponetially from there.

The finest OU double rifles by far that I have seen including all the others mentioned are the Berettas.
Spoken like someone that has never laid eyes on a double made by Peter Hofer Jagdwaffen or Szecsei & Fuchs Jagdwaffe (those crazy Austrians sure turn out some mighty sharp lookin' rifles). ;)

The Beretta OU is available in 458 Win Mag. Nice case colored sidelocks with gold inlays of your choice. $55,000. Obviously Beretta was trying to economize by using an Over Under configuration as opposed to a side by side.

Mav, I admit I have never seen either of those examples of Austrian workmanship. If I was going to buy into that realm however I would use Ivo Fabri instead. I am more of a shotgun man myself. My Perazzi pales in comparison to the Fabris I've handled.

You are wrong, that Valmet 412 DOES have double triggers!
Perhaps I am, but all the ones I have seen had a single trigger. Was this particular example modified or simply an uncommon factory option?

:)

Perhaps you are??? No, you are wrong, it DOES have double triggers...

It was an option, and it wasn't all that "uncommon". I myself have installed MANY sets, and they are still available to install in anyone elses 412/512.

The only ass here, was the person who implied that the OWNER of the above 412 didn't know whether it had double triggers or not.

Instead of trying to make me look bad, why don't you just move the thread foreward with some accurate helpful info?
