O/u

I'm looking for input here guys.I'm thinking about a o/u for a turkey gun.A turkey choke in one barrel for those longer shots and a modified in the other.They are generally shorter than pumps or semis.Any recomendations or thoughts appreciated.Thanks.

I don't know of any reason this wouldn't work out for you. The main thought in my head is that turkey shots are generally taken from a seated position and the average o/u is set up for a standing person shooting upwards, you might find the recoil, stock fit to be a bit of an issue especially if you're going to have to sit still with it. I'm sure there are a lot of turkeys that have been taken with the rig you are suggesting, however this isn't the current trend. I have found the Bakail line of o/u 's to be very reasonably priced and they are too flashy to spoil your hunt.

Sounds good to me. As long as the thing has a 3" chamber, it'll work. As with all turkey setups, patterning and load choice are imperative for humane and clean kills.

Here is my thinking on turkey loads....THEY HURT! I prefer a gas gun for harvesting gobblers as they tend to tame some of the recoil more than a pump or break action. You can get barrels for either set up in just about any length you want from 27" to 32". Extra length really does not give you any advantage in a turkey gun. You are sighting on a single bead most of the time so the sight picture stays the same. You usually are not swinging, so the added weight on the end that aids in follow through is not a factor. What it comes down to, though, is what you like. The hunt is all about you, what you enjoy and what will harvest the gobbler in a most humane manner.

I'm with hoploholic, I love my Red Label for just about everything but turkey loads? I think I would flinch so bad I would miss If you are really into turkeys a good auto would be best. If however you must have an O/U may I recommend the Ruger Red Label. It has the 3" chamber that you are looking for. I don't know of many O/Us that do.

I'll have to say..
Turkey loads kick real bad, but I never notice when I pull one off at a gobbler. I think I would get a 26" barreled 12g Stoeger Condor and have a mid bead or fiber optic turkey sights put on it. I have a 20g Stoeger and it works wonderfully on clays. You can get them at Dicks for $300, too. Or your local gun shop.
Turkeys are addicting.

Thanks for the comments.3 inch turkey loads are really not an issue for me.My current gun is a Stoeger 2000 which is recoil activated and most of the turkey and geese I've taken were with a Savage 311.I have no desire to use the 3.5 inch shells as the 3 inch will drive #5 shot thru a turkey at 30 yards.

Because I use a cane in my right hand I have to carry the gun on my left shoulder.The bolt handle on the auto hangs up in my clothes and the lenght of the gun makes it hard to move in dense cover.
