are the cheaper $500 dollar o/u shotguns junk or will they last for shooting trap

They don't tend to last very long, their triggers and balance tend to leave a lot to be desired, their fit is also something of a disappointment.

For trap singles only, find a used Browning BT-99 running about 800-1000 - it will last several generations

With any of the clay games, the cost of targets and ammo far surpass the cost of even the most expensive gun in a short time

I'd suggest saving up a little longer and getting a used Beretta or Browning....
