Obama: Don't stock up on guns

It doesn't make me feel worse either. In fact I'd say it's pretty darn irrelevant.

"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear.

Those two lines seem to contradict themselves. :uhoh:

"We just think it's a bit stupid," said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.

Wow, how articulate.

He already has stated that he's going to reinstate the assault weapons ban. I guess this falls under common sense gun laws.

Nobody believes Obama, his words vs his actions.

I like the quote, especially "more than enough" line from Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.

"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue. We don't think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."

Obama says: No need to stock up on Guns...

My Thoughts:
The last quote in the article I think peers into the mentality most of these guys have.

"You have enough," can quickly become, ""You already have one," and "You already have one," also quickly becomes, "You don't need one," and therefore becomes, "You can't have one," and "Give me all your guns."

It happened in Australia. The population in Australia is small compared to ours, but the gov't there spent $500 million to collect all weapons from law-abiding citizens and destroy them. Crime there has gone through the roof! The same thing has happened in Great Britain. We'll learn at some point I guess. All this postulation will eventually be either right or wrong, and from my side of it, I'd much rather suffer the consequences of being wrong (and just owning a few extra), than being right (and not being allowed to own any).

The Article:
BY ABDON M. PALLASCH <mailto:[email protected]> Political Reporter
As gun sales shoot up around the country, President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that gun-owning Americans do not need to rush out and stock up before he is sworn in next month.
"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."
But National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it's not Obama's words — but his legislative track record — that has gun-buyers flocking to the stores.
"Prior to his campaign for president, his record as a state legislator and as a U.S. Senator shows he voted for the most stringent forms of gun control, the most Draconian legislation, gun bans, ammunition bans and even an increase in federal excise taxes up to 500 percent for every gun and firearm sold," Arulanandam said.
Obama answered "yes" in 1996 to a questionnaire from an Illinois group on whether he supported a handgun ban. But he later said a staffer filled out that answer and he did not support a ban.
Nationally, background checks for gun purchases jumped nearly 49 percent during the week Obama was elected, compared with the same time period last year, according to the FBI's National Instant Background Check System.
Anecdotally, gun dealers around the country have reported spikes in sales. The Illinois State Rifle Association Reports gun sales for November were 38 percent higher than last year.
"We don't dispute [the gun sales hike] because the numbers from the federal system certainly confirm that there is increased activity out there. We just think it's a bit stupid," said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.
"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue. We don't think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."

Well, no actually, we DON'T even need to look at his track records - his WORDS there are quite sufficient to justify doing exactly what he says we don't need to do (go out and buy guns): Look at the very FIRST thing he said - "I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, [....]"

Now to ANYONE who has followed the gun-banners (of which Obama is squarely a part of) actions and words over the years, and studied what they say and what they really do, KNOWS beyond a shadow of a doubt that "common sense" "gun safety" legislation - these words are nothing more than euphemistic code phrases for drastic, massively-infringing restrictions on our gun freedoms, including but not limited to:

1. Closing down gun shows completely (they claim to want to stop the gun show "loophole", but the reality is that the way the proposed laws are worded has the effect of shutting down the shows entirely, due to the onerous nature of the restrictions).
2. One gun a month laws
3. Repeal of Tiahrt amendment
4. Complete ban on semi-auto rifles with certain non-PC features like detachable mags.
5. Ever expanding the NICS check beyond its original intent (of preventing felons from acquiring guns), by dividing and conquering certain unpopular subgroups of gun buyers (those who seek mental health counseling, those under an unproven domestic restraining order, etc), on and on until there's no one left.

The list goes on and on (even forgetting about the wildly lunatic fringe stuff he advocated as a state senator - just strictly talking here about what he STILL supports, not what he allegedly no longer supports, such as complete handgun bans and 500% tax on guns & ammo).

Just the fact that one of those things considered by these nincompoops like Obama to be a "gun safety" "common sense" restriction is a complete outright ban on an entire class of weapons, clearly in violation of the US Constitution, is enough to prove that anything and everything they say about their proposals being "reasonable" or relating to "gun safety", is nothing more than lies, smoke, lies, mirrors, and lies.

So sure, of course the great gun banner does not want us to empower the industry he seeks to destroy by us giving them our money. Not hard to figure out.

"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue"

I really don't understand at all what Mr. Hamm means by this statement - WHO is making progress? On what? In what way is progress being made? But regardless, if was telling the truth, he would say something similar but opposite in meaning:

"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly HAS been paying attention to how quickly we Democrats at the federal level make progress on this issue of infringing your rights once we get into power." Then the quote would make perfect sense.

So... is he basically admitting that they are trying to ban guns, but that it is just taking forever in that statement?

I just worry he might find some way to retroactively void all transfers made in the last few months. It's highly doubtful, but with a Democrat-controlled government you never know.

Commons sense guns laws is the Democrats phrase for

A) reinstituting the "aussault weapons" band

and

B) closing the gun show "loophole"

Go and read the democratic party platform. In politics people use vague wording and symbols so that the masses can interpret it the way the want. Who would say that they are against reasonable gun control laws? The rub is in the way one defines reasonable gun control. For some that means the current laws, for others it means very very limmited restrictions and laws and for others reasonable means every bloody restriction you can get passed. It is safe to say that some one like President elect Obama saying reasonable gun control laws is in fact referencing at a minimum assault weapons ban and the gun show loophole. I can promise you that what is "common sense" to him is not for most o us. His record speaks to that. If he didn't care at all about people having guns why even make a statement on it?

Of course he doesn't want us to stock up. If he really has no problem with lawful owners having guns, then why is he concerned that we are buying MORE guns?!?!? I think a lot of people may get eaten by that wolf in sheep's clothing.

They HAVE to comment on the one thriving industry in a failing economic environment. It must nonpluss all of their deep thinkers. :)

another more fun thought: If we stop buying guns what do you think of the chances of Ruger and Smith & Wesson CEOs flying out to DC for a "bailout"?

Maybe Obama ought to express his gratitude to us for not being a problem he has to solve.

Sounds awfully damned political for a forum which doesn't permit "political discussion."

Well I'll give him this, he's more qualified to recognize STUPID than anyone else I know.

Election's over, this is your president and the Brady Campaign speaking now. Reality vs Politics.

Politics is defined as "social relations involving authority or power" so if you truly ban all political discussions then there won't be much left since even legal conversations would be political. There's such thing as common sense. And, this doesn't seem to me to qualify as politics since it's a public statement by the President-elect on actions taking place daily by gun owners. Reality, not politics.

krs

Maybe Obama ought to express his gratitude to us for not being a problem he has to solve.

Or better still, why hasn't he pointed out that he is solving the economic crisis by first stimulating gun sales. He thought of the whole thing and and......

I certainly think they have a gun banning agenda in mind but right now the only thing they can do is try to belittle the people who are buying guns right now and downplay the idea that they want to ban guns in a vain attempt to stop the activity they so loath. Remember always be vigilant!

A liberal president taking credit for having armed citizens...... yah, somehow I don't think that would happen, at least not in a first term.
