Obama Healthcare Reg a Danger to Gunowners???

I may be off my rocker on this, but I need to check it out with some knowledgeable folks who are familiar with federal laws.

Many are stumped over a new healthcare regulation requiring all business transactions in excess of $600 to be reported on Form 1099 to the federal government, especially the IRS.

One article says: "the IRS will not be setting these rules. Instead, those noted tax experts at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be writing and overseeing these tax regulations. Why? Who knows? It is the Alice in Wonderland world of the Obama health care bill."

In short, no one knows why this was stuffed into the Obama healthcare bill. Also, the details have yet to be written.

The implications for gun owners is staggering. Every gun transaction $600 and over must be reported, and as I said, the details have yet to be written. By the time this takes effect, think of how many firearms will be in that price range. And the federal government can stipulate what information will be included. It can require the names, addresses, serial numbers and anything else it wants. It will add yet another bureaucratic step for gun stores that will certainly affect the prices of firearms nationwide.

Am I being paranoid or can this be aimed at putting gun stores out of business and requiring yet more information to the government about gun buyers. What do you think?

We've talked about this before and every time it's been debunked. Even the NRA considers it unrealistic to worry about it (and they weighed in on the health care debate to deal with real threats), but there are others in the "gun rights" community that want to see a monster in every closet so they can keep gun owners contributing to them.

What's been debunked? The issue about the 1099? That IS true. The part about putting gun stores out of business or the inherent paranoia some have about owning guns? Another story

I thought this was only for business transactions between business' and their supplies, not retail transactions to customers.

It would not apply to a gun store and its customers. The regulation, starting in 2012, would require every business to file a 1099-MISC for all vendors payments whose total for the year exceeds $600. This is not a new law. The old law required a 1099-MISC be filed for payments of services in excess of $600. The new law includes services and goods.

The gun store is not paying a customer and, therefore, would not be issuing a 1099-MISC except for any individual from whom it bought (not sold) a firearm(s) in excess of $600 for the year.

I don't know exactly what you misunderstood but you sure did a good job of it.

As of right now if you make income over $600 it is supposed to be reported for tax purposes, and I learned this after my dad won on a scratch off ticket. I don't see what this has to do with guns at all.

Yes, it's an over-reaction, in THIS case, but thank God people are looking at these things, because a LOT of this kind of stuff (especially with every bill lately being 2,300 pages long, and being voted on without those voting even READING it), is going to be snuck in under the radar. Believe it.

Try this, if you can get your congressman/woman to answer the phone, ask them what exactly is in either the financial reform bill or the health bill that they foisted upon us.

As pointed out the tax filing requirement only an expansion from services to services plus goods. Nothing more and nothing sinister.

We should be on the look out for efforts on the part of antis to suborn our rights, but we need to be aware that we can be our own worse enemy when we give substance to myth by perpetuating them. We need to be nearly as vigilant for these since they distract us from real moves against us and they dilute our effort to defend and restore the 2nd. Think of them as phantom divisions drawing our forces off target due to our own bad intelligence.
