Thought I'd let you know that he is giving a speech on his package to curve gun violence, @ 11:45 EST

It's going to be a staged media event. I expect him to throw all sorts of proposals out there, some of which he knows have no chance of passage. The interesting thing to watch for will be the Executive Order proposals, that he can implement on his own. I wouldn't be too worried about the rest of it, at this stage.

Dog and pony. He will execute 19 EO's, NONE of which will include bans on high capacity or weapons. He WILL propose a ban on high capacity mags and "assault" rifles---however he will pass it on to Congress(so it is worthless). He can then say(with kids around him)---I did EVERYTHING in my power(19 EO's) and under the law I can only propose to Congress these other changes. These will be voted down. After the next incident he will then point to Congress and say, see they voted this down and I did all in my power---so blame them. He wants to paint them in a corner for when it happens again before midterms.

While I agree with you about saturation, watch what happens after Obama speaks. "SOME" will confuse his proposing a ban on high capacity and weapons(thru Congress) and the 19 EO's. The 19 will be toothless while the ban proposal has no chance of passing. But some will take his proposal of legislation as an EO!

There may actually be something useful that comes out of this. We all have been screaming for years to enforce the laws on the books. It looks like at least one of the EOs will address this. The one about prosecuting people who lie on background check applications would be a good thing if they are actually going after people who maliciously lie on the application. Now if they would just nail people doing straw purchases we might have something meaningful.

We had a teacher get sentanced last month in Huntsville, AL. She got paid to buy some guns and hand them to someone who should never have had them.

She got the grand total of two years probation and six months of electronic monitoring.

There is no reason for that kind of soft punishment. I play by the rules and I expect others to play by them also. Weak punishments like that have lead to a lack of respect for the rules.
