I stumbled upon a product called ocats and was somewhat intrigued by this system. It uses a spotting scope and a laptop to track one's shots on a target to give one feedback as to how to improve one's marksmanship. I gagged on the price, but I wonder whether this has merit? Link.

Hello, I am Jim Cline, from OutWest Systems here in Colorado Springs and one of the Developers of the OCAT System. When we see people have concerns we try to answer the questions if we can.

I am not sure why price you are looking for the system, but you can start out as low as $295 for a laser training system if you already have a laser up to the "Deluxe" kit that has a new pretty nice laptop with it. The "basic" or "standard" systems are not much for than a good quality firearm. With all the features and money you can save by using laser training and getting more bang for the buck when do you hit the range, we think you are getting your money's worth.

If you have any questions about what they systems does or how it does it, just ask. We like to talk about what we are doing.

Interesting concept. I would be beneficial if the website gave a better description of the acutal usage of each of the various levels.

The first things that jumps out at me is price is not bad and you have a dry fire / live fire modes. The other system I am aware of is Scatt. I don't know it firsthand. The good point of Scatt according to its users is it can show a trace of your hold prior to & after the shot. Downside is price. No live fire mode either.
It appears the Ocat will work with all fire arms including air guns and even airsoft.
I have to say your system interest me. I am not 100% understanding it yet or how to utilize it. The biggest advantage I see at this point is an impartial verifiable feedback system. Last year I shot at least $156 in air rifle pellets. That is right at half of your minimum price point.
I would like to hear more about how to utilize it. Anything you want to post here consider me asking.
Thanks,
Mike

Laser Trace - The current system does do a laser trace much like the Scatt system does. The big difference that in trace mode we don't detect the pulse of a laser shot. (Something we may be working on the future). So if you just want to see how steady you are through pulling the trigger, they system works well for that. We also work with any firearm that is putting out a steady laser, even laser bore devices will work for this.

Laser Hit detection - While doing this we see the short laser pulse and mark the location on the screen and store it in the database. This allows you to do realistic dry-fire training. We the laser dry-fire training you can work on your sight picture and trigger pull.

Live Fire Hit detection - In live fire mode, we "see" the holes that are put through the paper and mark those as hits. You are using the same system and can compare live fire vs dry-fire training. So you can identify mistakes you are making that are not just trigger pull or sight picture.

One of the biggest advantages with the system is that it is easy to set up and use and it is just sits their watching what you are doing. Shooting session after shooting session it is your silent witness to what you are doing and the bad or good habits that you have. It knows the location and timing of each shot that you have done. If you are pulling shots when you rush the shot, the OCAT System will show you that. If you are anticipating recoil, the OCAT System will show you that.

Now there was a question about the version "levels", I am guessing you are asking about the different kits and their capabilities. There is really just two different capabilities, Laser Only and Full versions of the software, everything else is options and goodies. The laser kit of course comes with all the stuff you need for starting out with laser (software can be upgrade to the full version for the difference in the software prices). The basic kit is all you need if have a compatible spotting scope. The Standard kit is everything you need to get going. The deluxe kit is the kit for people that want everything in one bag, has a lot of goodies and extras.

A computer is required for using the system but most people have those now days. For laser-dry fire a desktop computer will work just as well as a laptop, we have someone that is using their desktop for laser-dry fire.

Hopefully I have answered those questions. If you have anymore, or I didn't really answer what you asked, let me know.

Jim.
