Hi. First post & thanking everyone in advance for answers. I have been skulking around this site a long time, but finally stumped to the point of needing to post up.

I just bought an odd 39a Marlin Golden. AB XXX serial number so 1966 production. In great shape (for an almost 50 year old rifle), but the front sight base & screw heads in the receiver & butt plate & grip cap are gold coated with the same finish as the trigger. Also it came with a military type leather sling with the serial number stamped on the underside of it. I hate the ghetto-gold looking stuff, but if it's some sort of ultra rare model or something, I won't take it over to my gunsmith & have it Ceracoated. I stripped all of the parts off of it & got a mountain of rimfire mud from under all the springs & crevices. I had to use bronze dental picks to get everything from out of the corners, etc. It was disgusting. I seem to remember Sears or someone having these set up like that, but it's been a lot of years since I was young. Any info would help.

That seems to be the Marlin "Golden" 39A so yes, a special edition. Don't know about any extra value, but might be worth it to go over to Rimfire Central and check in the Marlin forum.

I'm not aware of any factory rifles done up with gold screws.

I'm thinking that it's something a previous owner did.

I am not, however, any thing like a Marlin Guru so I recommend research it carefully before restoring it to "Normal". I don't think it's worth more than the usual Model 39, but I've been wrong before.

To me it looks like something a previous owner did, the golden name is standard for that period of time. I'd still try and do some research on it before I changed anything.

Goldens have been around for decades. Best I can tell most long barrel 39s are called Goldens. My 20 year old 39 is a Golden, but only came with a gold colored trigger and the word Golden on the barrel inlaid with gold paint. The inlaid paint has long since faded from oiling.

Even Marlin's current webpage calls their 39 a Golden. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/22rifle/golden39a.asp

I have no idea if Marlin ever trimmed up the 39 with gold screws and front sight base though. Could be.

I've never seen or heard of a factory 39a with gold screws or sights.

According to the Blue Book, the Golden 39-A rifle was made from '59 to '87. The Golden 39-A Mountie was made from '57 to '72.
