Recently owning up to the fact I don't practice enough with my off hand here is what I am noticing. Normally I shoot with my right hand with both eyes open. If I were to close my left eye, the sights are still lined up perfectly with my right eye. So when I shoot with my left hand with both eyes open it seems I end up bending my wrist slightly to get a good sight picture. My wrist is bent so that my hand goes off to the left slightly, I'm assuming to compensate for using my right eye. I know this isn't good as recoil causes my left arm to not rise straight up making it more difficult to get back on target. Plus it just doesn't feel right at all.

How do I overcome this or what am I doing wrong with my offhand grip? I can remedy by closing my right eye but would rather keep both open. Is it just a matter of forcing myself to use left eye with left hand and lots of practice?

Thanks for any advice.

I shoot with both eyes open as well. In fact, for whatever weird reason I CAN'T close just my right eye. I can close my left eye, I can both, but when I try to just close my right the left goes with it. So, I just accept that I'm slower and keep using my dominant eye, because I just really don't have a choice.

I noticed that I tend to turn my head to the left a bit so I don't have to bring the gun over as far to line it up with my dominant eye.

[makes note to practice more weak hand shooting]

Try turning your head to help compensate. I used to shoot righty, but was left eye dominant and that worked for me. So for you, turn your head a little to the left to help the right eye line up.

For cross eys dominant shooting I always teach the Quell System developed by Paris Theodore. After practicing, to test the system, I shot an entire IPSC match using it back around 1986 or 87. The January 1987 issue of SWAT magazine has a nice four page article on "The Quell System". I have a post describing the technique on TFL back in 1999.

Finally got to go look at that thread. I see the mention of the Quell system but no description. Curiosity peaked on the stance used in this method.

Thanks for the other replies as well. Turning the head just feels ackward, may just need more practice at it.
