I finally got a couple of hours today to hit the range. All I wanted to do was to make sure my new Yost-Bonitz Delta ( http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=162510 ) ran like a swiss watch.
The temp today while there was about 45 degrees with the wind blowing right to left at about 12-15 miles an hour. That barely qualifies as a breeze up here.
I started out by loading up my 5 Colt mags with American Eagle 180gr FMJ. It went through the 5 of them without a hitch. Slow fire, rapid fire, it ate it all without a hiccup. The trigger has a tiny bit of takeup, followed by a crisp letoff at about 4 lbs, just estimating. I don't have a trigger gauge. The sights were dead on from 7yds to 25 yds. The beauty of a flat shooting round. It has the Novak front sight with a gold inlay in it. It picks up the light very well in low light situations, and blends into the sight with high ligt. The rear is a Novak adjustable, they provide a very clear sight picture for these tired old eyes.
After running 100 rounds of the American Eagle through it, I switched over Double Tap 180gr Gold Dot JHP. It is a definate step up in power. The recoil was very managable, with the high cut front strap and minimized beaver tail the recoil pushed up more than snapping up. It was with the Double Tap I started having problems with FTF's. Out of 50 rounds, I had 4 FTF's, the nose of the bullet was pushed into the ramp, rather than feeding up the ramp. I am not real happy with that.
I then switched to Double Tap 165gr Gold Dot JHP and had a repeat of the problems that I had with the 180gr. It was not limited to any one magazine with either ammo. I had several FTF's, with the nose of the bullet hitting the bottom of the feed ramp. I also had a couple of times that the slide failed to lock back after the last round when using the Double Tap.
The gun is very accurate. It has a Scheumann Ultimatch barrel. I don't know if I will ever be able to shoot to the capability of this gun. I will let you know in about 10 thousand rounds. By then I should know.
Now, what is my next step? Well, the FTF's are concerning to say the least. I am going to replace all of my mag springs for starters, and then get a 24lb recoil spring to replace the 20 pound one that is on the FLGR now.
After that is is back to the range to make sure it works, every time. Until then I am not going to carry this gun. I am sure with the mag springs and heavier recoil spring the problems will be solved.
This is my last mag from 25yds, I pulled one left at 9 o'clock just off of the target. This was the 165gr Double Tap. I need to practice, or get out of the wind, or maybe a little of both.
