Good News, the M&P Shield Parts are coming. However there are some Apex M&P kits that already work in the Shield right now.

Apex Tactical Specialties Informational Release

May 1, 2012
Greetings!

On April 13th, Smith & Wesson released their new M&P Shield. Since its release we've been inundated with requests for information about what Apex products will be available for the Shield. We've kept you all waiting for the last couple of weeks, so let's jump in to the Shield's similarities and differences in relation to the full size M&P.

Shield After 1000

What we know

When our Shield arrived here at Apex, it had a gritty pre-travel, hard break and relatively long over travel, yet a distinct reset. Upon detailed disassembly and inspection, we noticed the following parts interchangeable between the Shield and the full size M&P.

Sear
Sear Spring
Sear Plunger
Striker Block
Striker Block Spring
Striker Block Washer
Trigger Return Spring
Striker Assembly
Extractor Pin

That being said, our present M&P products were tested in the M&P Shield for function. We put a teaser on our Facebook page on April 25th, that we were testing our new M&P Shield Carry Kit (SCK). Claire, Jon and Scott took the M&P Shield to the Hogue Action Pistol range to fire the first 1000 rounds through the new M&P Shield in order to test our products for the release of the Shield Carry Kit and we will continue to shoot it more in coming weeks. The products we had installed in the Shield for that test were as follows:

Apex Hard Sear
Apex Ultimate Striker Block Kit(USB Kit)
Apex Duty/Carry Sear and Trigger Return Spring (DC Spring Kit)

Through 1000 rounds of Blazer Brass ammunition, the Shield performed admirably, feeding each round effortlessly with zero stoppages of any kind. The Shield was shot off hand with 2 hands, by left and right handed shooters as well as strong and weak hand only.

In the R&D lab, we tested the Shield with our Duty/Carry kit installed and it produced the same results as with the standard M&P series guns. The DCAEK took the trigger pull down from 5.75 lbs. with more than .110" over travel to 5 lbs. with .060" over travel, with a noticeably smoother uptake and crisper break.

The Apex Hard Sear and USB Kit were tested in conjunction with the factory springs in the Shield and we found the results to be the same as with other M&P models we've tested. The trigger pull was brought down to 4.25 lbs. with a smooth uptake and crisp break.

We do not recommend installing the Apex Competition Spring kit or Comp AEK into the M&P Shield as it is a product we feel is best kept with a trigger pull above the 4 lb. mark.

Apex Products that DO NOT work in the Shield

The Apex Forward Set Trigger and AEK triggers do not work in the M&P Shield. The factory trigger in the Shield is narrower than the M&P triggers. We are presently working on a solid body polymer trigger to replace the factory trigger.

The Apex Failure Resistant Extractor does not function in the Shield. The Shield Extractor is much narrower than the M&P Extractor. We are uncertain at this time if the necessity will exist for a Shield model of the FRE, but we will certainly look into it as time goes on.

The Trigger Pivot Pin in our M&P Shield measures .130 in diameter, which is significantly smaller than the full size M&P. The slave pins we currently offer in our Kits, will not work in the Shield. We are working to produce a slave pin specifically for the M&P Shield which will be included in any kit that requires the trigger to be installed into the frame.

Other Notable differences

The frame rails on the Shield's locking block are certainly stouter than the M&P's. The Sear Housing Block has an additional piece of frame rail on its left side right behind the ejector, which is never a bad thing, the more frame rail surface you have, the better the lockup and overall durability. The frame also has a steel support at the front, just forward of the locking block, which we surmise adds rigidity to the frame to enhance durability.

Final Thought

The M&P Shield is a great little carry gun. Its magazine capacities of 7 and 8 rounds coupled with its slim line body and reliability make is a great carry piece.

Might have to pick up the USB and Hard Sear, I think. The Shield trigger pull has clearly been lawyerized into being heavier than the other M&Ps.

I own one and the trigger is better than the other M&Ps (of which I have owned two), but it feels heavier than my M&P .40 or my M&P9c. With such a small gun, the increased weight and the mushy break on mine makes a noticeable effect on accuracy.

You'd think S&W would figure out what people want in a trigger by now and do that. I love M&P pistols, but think it's sad they haven't drastically improved the triggers from the factory yet.

I like the factory trigger in The SHield. I HATE the standard M&P trigger. With the Shield's trigger slowly coming top regular M&Ps, I could see myself maybe buying a fullsize M&P one day.

I don't know why you would feel the need to mess with the trigger on the shield. Mine at least is as good as the trigger on a pro series right out of the box.

I also HATE the M&P standard triggers. I shot mfg reps M&P9 FS and M&P9C and they were good, but they had 4k or 8k+ on them maybe.
When I got my new M&P9L last year it was very gritty, got it a few weeks to a month after I shot those mfg reps guns and it was very noticeable. However when I bought the gun I already put a pre-order at Apex for the FSS & Trigger and am very happy with it. The M&P9L trigger was so bad I waited a few weeks or a month even until I got the FSS installed before I would even shoot it. Granted I'm sure it would of felt much better after 500 rounds and especially 1000 but the FSS for me was the way to go.

On the Shield; since they made the trigger better and since it comes with a safety I don't know why they upped the lbs, carry gun or not. If the lbs are too high and you have more of a chance of missing your target, how is that lawsuit safe?

I believe that a lower lb. trigger makes 95% of the population more accurate shooters. I'd assume massage therapists and hands on constructions workers.... wouldn't really tell the difference. For me with constant hand, wrist and neck pain it is very, very noticeable. So for me Apex parts are a must. I may not need the FSS & Trigger for the Shield (if they make a new trigger for it) but it would be really nice, however I don't know if I would keep it at the 3 lbs. I have it set to now in my M&P9L. Probably set it in the Shield to 3.75 lbs. to 4 lbs., but I'd have to practice a lot of drawing from IWB to see even with my physical problems if it's smart to do 3 lbs.

I believe __if__ your proficient (which I'm not at this time), then 3 lbs with a short trigger isn't a big deal (1911) however for a first CCW then I think I'd be taking to big of a risk for the first 3 months for sure. Unless I'd practice 15 draws a day on average for months before I even carried it live.

I wouldn't want a defensive pistol with a trigger pull under 4 pounds. Unless you are using it for bullseye competition its not necessary and too risky IMO. Trigger pulls under 4 pounds are best reserved for rifles.

With the Shield's trigger slowly coming top regular M&Ps, I could see myself maybe buying a fullsize M&P one day.

Don't do it, Ship.....I have seen the what happens when you find a gun that you like....I don't know if I can handle a *gulp* M&P Wheel :what:
