Long Guns Recently Turned In at Phoenix event in May, 2013

Cleveland,Ohio, will be hosting a gun turn in event on 15 June, 2013. While these events are commonly labeled with the propaganda term "buyback" the guns were never owned by the people attempting to buy them.

The event will be held at Public Safety Central located at 2001 Payne Avenue, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Gift cards of $100 will be given to those who turn in a handgun, $200 will be given to those who turn in semi-automatic Assault Rifles (no definition given). No gift cards will be given to those turning in ordinary rifles and shotguns, but they will be entered into a raffle for the chance to receive $1,000.

As only the chance at a raffle is being offered for ordinary long guns, a cash offer might be welcome. Many of the long guns turned in at these events are valuable items.

Across the country, communities, police departments and churches are sponsoring gun turn-ins to get "guns off the street". At many of these events, private buyers are showing up, offering cash for the more valuable guns. These private additions to the public turn-in are effective, no doubt, in getting more guns off the street, because they add to the resources that are available to those who want to get rid of guns for something of value, be it a grocery card or a number of twenty dollar bills.

You can help make the turn-in in your area more effective by standing on the curve with your "Cash for Guns" sign, or at a folding table, willing to offer more than the gift card for firearms that are more valuable. It would be best if numerous private parties were available, as more good guns could then be transferred into responsible hands.

This action serves many useful purposes. It stretches the turn-in budget so that more guns can be taken off the street. It helps keep fearful widows from being defrauded of most of the market value of the gun they are turning in. It prevents valuable assets from being destroyed by bureaucratic inflexibility. It is a win-win-win situation.

It also dispels the pernicious message that guns are bad and should be destroyed.

Any local knowledge of the area and police attitudes would be appreciated.
The police don't like it.

Nobody cares.

If I'm not mistaken, video cameras (and possibly lawyers) will be on hand in case of any acting out...

Maybe I'll visit and check things out. However, most of what I have seen at prior Cleveland buybacks hasn't been all that great. Every now and then a cherry shows up but a ton of literally junk. Nothing planned for June 15th so maybe.

Yes, the Cleveland PD gets a little annoyed when people try to pee on their parade. However, as long as someone is within their legal rights there isn't much they can do about it. Right now they seem to have a less than stellar image in the public eye so I doubt they will do much if anything at all. Just make sure any transactions are kept legal and above board.

News article about last year's affair.

As Cleveland cops exchanged gift cards and sports tickets for guns Saturday, they watched as a cadre of young men stood nearby and offered cash for weapons.

And it was all legal.

They not only had the audacity to feed off a police safety initiative, one of the few in the country, but showed up with copies of the Ohio Revised Code that condoned their conduct, police said.

"Isn't that something?," said Police Chief Michael McGrath who was at the gun buyback, outside Public Safety Central at East 21st Street and Payne Avenue. "Here we're trying to save lives and they're right in our face, trying to buy guns cheap so they can sell them at a profit."

McGrath [as usual] is full of crap.

If he thought they were:
  1. buying for resale
  2. not licensed FFLs
, he wouldn't have hesitated to bring in the BATFE.

He didn't, and hence he didn't.

It's perfectly legal in Ohio to make a face to face purchase, so long as the purchaser is not a prohibited person, and is not illegally "doing business" as a dealer of firearms without an FFL.

After the recent reinactment of the movie "Gauntlet" by the Cleveland PD, and his attempts to portray ten years of inaction in the Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina de Jesus abduction cases as some sort of "heroic triumph" for the Cleveland PD, NOBODY takes McGrath seriously anymore.

It amounts to the citizen having as much RIGHT to buy the guns as the police. Simple laws of commerce. If the local government wants to buy guns and destroy them, while bordering on the stupid, they have that right. IF the citizen want to buy the guns and keep, or legitimately sell them, they have that right, too. Nothing wrong with honest competition.

I have a horrible 22lr semi-broken Saturday night special revolver I wouldn't mind trading for a $100 gift card...complete with broken, electrical tape wrapped grips...been in the family for decades.

The quote from the Cleveland Chief of Police really irks me. I can assure you that he doesn't speak for the majority of us in law enforcement, though too many others with 4 stars on their shoulder probably feel similarly.

His statement makes it pretty evident that he actually believes that guns are responsible for crime, rather than criminals. Apparently he has been off of the street for too long.

Guns in the hands of the Cleveland cops that shot up a car with unarmed folks in it must have been the cause. One cop was quoted saying, "It wasn't me! The gun made me do it!" (Just kidding, but they DID fire over a hundred rounds into the car. Legal issues still pending).
