Armed Ohio man detained in Israel says he was off to Afghanistan to find bin Laden

Fri Feb 21, 8:30 AM ET

JERUSALEM - An 81-year-old Ohio man armed with two pistols was briefly detained in Israel and told police that he was on his way to Afghanistan (news - web sites) in hopes of hunting down Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) and claiming a US$25 million bounty, the man's Israeli lawyer said Friday.

To avoid facing charges after appearing before a judge, Daniel Chick agreed to give up his weapons and leave Israel, said his attorney, Gideon Costa. Chick flew to Athens, Greece, on Wednesday, the attorney said.

Police in the port city of Haifa stopped Chick on Tuesday as he tried to board a boat for Cyprus and found the two hand guns and ammunition in his bag.

"He was looking for bin Laden for the adventure," said Costa, who did not know how to contact Chick after his departure from Israel.

The United States has offered a US$25 million reward for information that helps capture bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader.

The lawyer did not know much about Chick — what city he was from, if he had a family, how or why he intended to find bin Laden or why he ended up in Israel. After leaving the United States, Chick made stops in Germany to visit a daughter and in Italy, where he caught a flight to Israel, the lawyer said.

Chick wore military-style pants and sweater, said Costa, who helped arrange the deal allowing him to go free if he agreed to leave the country.

"I got the impression he was a nice guy," Costa said.

"If he gets the reward money I told him to remember that I had a part in the effort," the lawyer said with a laugh.

That we should be capable of such an adventure at age 81. BTW, Bin Laden is probably in Pakistan.

How do they expect to get Bin Laden if they arrest the people that are going after him? What good is a bounty if you can't go after him.:scrutiny:

I have said this before but I don't really think the U.S. wants to capture Bin Laden.

I don't think an 81 year old has much of a chance on his own but its worth a try. I would LMFAO if he ended up getting him.

I'm all for the old guy. He's got more fire in his belly than most of the guys I know who are 1/3 his age or younger. Now thats a sad commentary on American young people.
