this is what started the whole thing, a reporter had to come up with a story or lose his job... the truth is a felon can hunt in NY with a muzzle loader or a bow. NY law is the same as the feds, a muzzle loader is not classified as a firearm. they can not use an inline muzzle loader..there must be a lot of murders commited in the woods of NY by felons with those flint locks..

Convicted felons hunting with guns in NY

Nearly 700,000 New Yorkers hunt. NewsChannel 13 has uncovered that some of them are convicted felons, out in the woods, with guns. Convicted felons are banned from possessing firearms. They can still get hunting licenses but no one is in charge of making sure they don't get guns.
Hunting season brings back memories for Bill Hamm, who can't wait to take his son out again.

"You could see the joy it brought to him, it was the same joy it brought to me when I was with my father. It was really rewarding for me," says Hamm.

First though, he has to be released from Eastern New York State Correctional Facility. He's up for parole in April.

This is his third prison stint, the second for burglary.

"My first incarceration was at 17 years old," says Hamm.

But he got his hunting license at 16.

"It was only after that that I was convicted of the crimes and it was never brought up, I'd go to the county clerk, show them my ID, old hunting license, and they would renew no questions asked," according to Hamm.

While Maine's hunting license application asks if you're a convicted felon, New York's does not.

The Department of Environmental Conservation issues hunting licenses. Felons can use it for bow hunting or a muzzleloader, which is not defined as a firearm in New York State.

DEC says the license does not authorize the recipient to own or possess firearms, but no one is requried to check.

"Being that you're convicted of a felony, I know that you can't own a gun," admits Hamm. We then pointed out that one of the kills he reported was with a gun. We asked if it was his. He said, "yeah, it was."

New York State Parole requires a home visit before an inmate is released on parole. They say they found no guns at Hamm's home in 2000.

If someone serves their entire term, no one checks.

NewsChannel 13 cross-checked information from DEC with the Department of Corrections.

Of the more than 102,000 hunting licenses issued in our area last year, 221 went to convicted felons.

Eight felons reported deer kills, with five admitting to illegally using a rifle or shotgun, but the real number may never be known.

"I know I'm not the only one who's been incarcerated who hunts," says Hamm.

It's the uncertainty that has some hunters calling for more scrutiny of who gets a license, especially since some of the felons with hunting licenses have been convicted of rape and manslaughter.

"DEC's definitely got to do something about it. I wouldn't want to be hunting in the same woods as a felon, especially with a gun, even though I only bow hunt, I would like them to do a background check of some sort," says hunter Doug Handy.

Dave Wood says he has no problems with a background check either, and would restrict felons hunting privileges even more.

"I don't feel they should be able to buy or possess black powder rifle because you can shoot it 200 to 250 yards just as accurately as you can a high powered rifle," adds Wood.

Bill Hamm says he's switching to bow hunting. He doesn't want to chance getting caught with a gun and end up back in prison. He also joins the call for more screening.

"You have to make the woods safe, just like the police have to make the streets safe, you have to make the woods safe too," says Hamm.

Don't mistake Spitzer's dribble for stupid.

It is deliberate misinformation.

It is intended to demonize guns and gun owners.

His object is to ban guns. Nothing more and nothing less. Facts are irrelevent.

Why don't we just put everyone in the freezer... right there next to Disney?
That'll keep everyone safe.

Ban DiHydrogen Monoxide!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi3erdgVVTw

This actually does a great job of illustrating the "mindset" of anti-gunners. They're just joining a cause, one which
is designed to make them *feel* good about themselves, and never mind the facts.
They'll just believe whatever they're shoveled.

Woody, it's actually Dihydrogen Oxide. Hydrogen Dioxide would be HO2

Just to be even more persnickety, why is it dihydrogen oxide instead of hydrogen hydroxide (H+, OH-)? ;) And why, while we're at it, is the rum gone?

Hokay, I'm-a shut up now.

Maybe the deer could start a Neighborhood Watch....

lol, be on the look out for Spitzer or the felons that are doing all the drive bys with flintlocks.

Sorry, we now return to your regular caterwauling.....

Although I suppose it's not "incorrect" perse, using the standard method, it'd be dihydrogen monoxide. Alternatively, hydrogen oxide would work. Dihydrogen oxide, however, is "meh." It's inconsistent.

Because using the latter would probably require a relatively confusing, if not inconsistent, naming system.

Will you guys quit with the hairsplitting?! We've got to get the word out about Dihydrogen Oxide! Stick your head in a bucket of this stuff and you're dead inside of five minutes!!!

That's what I was leaning towards as well. Crap like that is what really starts to get on my nerves. Just another string tied to the puppets we live amongst.

you know they are actually right, a 50 mussle loader can bring a plane down... then again so can my 17 remington. Any decent shooter that knows anythings about plans can take down a plane at take off with any gun.

its just like hunting, a bigger gun just means you have a bigger spot to hit.

might as well ban all guns now

If they had any sense they would ban planes!!

Up there flying around over our heads ready to fall on us at any moment!!!

THAT will solve every problem EVER!!!!!! :cuss:

Oh and people drown in water so we should make a law that people must stay away from that too.
