OUTDOORS NOTES

Women can begin to get ready for a day in the outdoors now that Lila Koston of Andover, Ohio, is back.

The popular Koston and the Grand River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation have put on award-winning Women in the Outdoors programs in northeast Ohio over the past three years. It appeared that Koston would have to pass on this year's program after major back and hip surgery, but the tireless taxidermist wouldn't give up.

"I couldn't bear to miss this year's event, even though I still have a little trouble getting around," said Koston. "I look forward to Women in the Outdoors day as much as the women who sign up for the seminars."

There are 21 WITO events on the Ohio schedule this year. Koston's day of fishing and hunting for women will kick things off on April 5 at the Crooked Creek Conservation Club in Hartsgrove, always one of the biggest WITO gatherings each year.

The popular program offers seminars that range from fly fishing to shooting shotguns, black powder rifles, bows and handguns. There are also classes in personal self defense, turkey calling, retrieving dog training, reading map and compass and bird watching. The $50 fee includes lunch at the club, just south of I-90 on Route 534 in western Ashtabula County.

Reservations are needed. Call Koston, 440-293-5615.

The *** does the same thing down here near Marietta, OH. Co-worker (heavy into ***) helps out and is held at the Washington Countey Fish and Game.
