I'm looking into opening a business with a friend, and one of the cities we've started to look at is Columbus, OH. However, when I look at packing.org, it appears that Ohio has pretty crummy laws when it comes to my right to defend myself. Can you guys give me the skinny on Ohio, please?

Specifically, is it possible at all for me to carry a gun there? Is open carry allowed, since concealed carry seems to be off-limits? What about carrying in my car? I would be planning on keeping a gun in the business with me, and I hate the idea of leaving one there overnight (although I guess I could lock it up in the safe). How about carrying the gun in my car and on my person while walking to my car? What's up there? Anyone know what the laws are like in Columbus pertaining to guns in businesses?

Any other info you could throw in about the political/business climate in Ohio would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

All the major OH cities, save, as best I can determine, Cleveland, regulate the purchase and sale of firearms to a greater degree than state law and have "assault weapon" provisions. Cincinnati seems to be the worst.

I'd consider remaining outside city limits to live and work, which is smart anyway, since most large cities have income taxes and higher sales tax, neither of which are beneficial to you or your customers and employees. Try looking at Dublin in the Columbus area.

You should really look into Cincinnati, as you can set up in either IN or KY and still cover the metro area. Only good thing about Ohio over these two states is no property tax on vehicles. Getting to know folks in Adams, Brown, or Scioto counties is a good thing, as you can register your car there and avoid the emissions testing ($$) that is found around the major urban areas.

Taxes on booze and cigarettes are high enough that folks have formed clubs in areas like Columbus, Dayton, etc. to make runs to KY to get these items in bulk. Ohio revenue dept. agents hang around large liquor stores in KY and IN to take OH tag numbers and have you pulled over on the way back into the state - been doing this for decades. A few relatives (a couple were LEOs) made it a business to smuggle alcohol and tobacco into the state in decades past.

Dont forget that we have a govoner that raised sales taxes and gas taxes last week and plays ccw friendly as long as the police get to approve and modify the laws.
