Ohio's revisions to concealed carry law went into effect today (14-Mar-2007). Among other things, it pre-empts city ordinances such as the Columbus "assault weapons" ban, and also allows concealed weapons to remain concealed on the carrier's person when in a motor vehicle. More at the Akron Beacon-Journal's website:

Most of the larger city governments (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo, etc.) have threatened to challenge the law -- no indication yet of any action (but hey, they've only had nine hours or so . . .)

Hizzoner Frank Jackson, Cleveland Mayor, has already held a press conference plainly stating the City has filed litigation over this. Here is a copy-n-paste of the press release (from Buckeye Fireams Assocoation):

Today the City of Cleveland filed a declaratory judgment against the State of Ohio to fight the enactment of Ohio Revised Code (RC) section 9.68 which seeks to threaten the safety of our children, citizens, businesses and visitors by nullifying local gun laws that were put in place to address the specific needs of the City of Cleveland. Mayor Frank G. Jackson has vowed to protect the city's residents and its right to home rule.

Cleveland has sooooo many other things that they should be spending the money on that will be used in this case

I didn't feel very safe when I visited Cleveland a couple years ago. Most of it was fine, but that night I left the hotel for supper I'd have been much more comfortable being armed.

It was strange today, to carry on my person in my car. First time I'v ever done that. Strange but good. :). I don't miss my little lock box that I use to place my pistol in. It was a pain to carry in a car like that.Thank god thats done.

Does this stand any real chance? I cant imagine it being 'overturned'. It was sad in the first place we didnt have preemption. Cities should not be allowed to violate the state consitution. States, in some ways can be like their own little countries, but I dont think the founding fathers intended cities to be so!

As an Ohio resident, I am concerned. I intended to get my CCW this year, with this being shot down I'd hate to go to the dreaded 'in plain site' crap.

Goodbye Cleveland, goodbye!

Left in August 2005, haven't looked back. Sorry to hear that you're going through that kind of crap, though.
