I've been hankering for a .22 target pistol for a while now.

I've looked at the Ruger web site about the new MKIII

Not real thrilled about the "enhancements" other than the mag release.

I'm considering a MK II since I hear once the MKIII takes off, the MK II will be phased out by attrition. I would imagine that price on a MK II would go up once they're out of production.

I've also looked at the Buckmark and one I think is called a Trailside?

I'm leaning towards a SS MK II with a bull barrel.

Taking into account accuracy, price and reliability, which would you recommend?

I'm not a varmint hunter. I live in Orlando and they frown on us plinking on the tourists. I try and shoot once a week, but I'm might consider getting into some silouette (sp) shooting if I find the right gun.

6-7/8" Government Competition Model, slab-side stainless steel bull barrel. The only .22lr semi-auto that I wish I'd kept.


Then again, I really never shoot .22lr pistols. They're still so loud, that I would rather just shoot a 9mm or larger.

If this thread gets real long, you'll see that the MKII, Buckmark and the Trailside are pretty evenly liked. Some diehards will also recomend High Standards, Colt Woodsman or the S&W 41 as being cream of the crop. Fewer folks will praise the S&W 22A's, Walthers, Beretta Neos and others. I'm anxiously waiting to buy a Buckmark Field when the new 17 Honady Mach 2 comes out in a few months.

Just to be different, I'll mention mine. I have a Benelli. I like it a lot.
The best part about it for me is that it's ambidextrous.

For the money my Buckmark 5.5 Target has been really great, but I also got it at a really great price. Have to keep the magazines pretty clean (every 2-300 hundred rounds) or they will start jamming. Other than that I've haven't had any problems with it.

Denny's here in North Kansas City, MO swears by the IZH-35 imported by EAA. True olympic performance for under $400. However mags are pricy and only 5 rounds.

I have one of the Buckmark Camper .22's (cheapest on they make) and it has been 100% reliable from day one for 5+ years. Generally only clean it once every 4-6 months and will go through a couple hundred rounds per month with no ill effects. Never cleaned the mag and no jamming so that may just be an issue with the "gucci" buckmarks. It's been cheap, simple, reliable and robust, can't go wrong. Having said that my dad's Ruger MKII has been the same for him for probably 20+ years. Can't go wrong with either once you figure out how to put the Ruger together after a good strip and clean.
