OK! All my permits are in order and I am ready to buy a .22 (and a higher caliber handgun too, but that is a different post.) I hear lots of good things about Rugers, so I went to all the local gun stores to take a look, and there were several for sale. I can get the "standard" Ruger Mk. III for $220, a Ruger Mk. II for $360, a Ruger Mk. III Target for $250, and I also saw a Ruger Mk. III Hunter for sale too but I can't recall the price at the moment (I think it was about $300.) Out of these I am leaning most heavily towards the Mk. III Target because I get the adjustable sights for only $30 more and it also has a grip more like a 1911 (which I am sure I will also get one day.) I know the Mk. II's are supposed to be better but I am not happy about paying 50% more for one of them, and I think the Mk. III will be good enough for a beginner. Does anyone have any experience with the Mk. III target? Would you recommend it? Are the adjustable sights and different grip worth $30 more?

I've got the Mark II Government Target with adjustable sights and I think what you're looking at is pretty similar. The adjustable sights are well worth it.

And they are very accurate guns. I highly recommend them. Buy and enjoy.

One other thought. Whenever, I strip it down for cleaning, I still have the manual at my side, because they don't strip like any other gun. But it's not a problem. Just different.

I presume those are used prices ... and they seem low even if so...the Hunter is quite new and selling price is north of $400 new.

You need to compare the products more closely ... the II shouldn't be that much more (probably less or equal to) the same model in a III.

Check for which are Target, bull barrel and/or bull barrel, slab-side in addition to the sight choices...also, if one has "a grip more like a 1911" are you sure you're not looking at a 22/45 model? That's a poly grip that is roughly 1911-like but none of the Mark series are.

I may be wrong about the hunter, because I didn't write down the price, but the other prices are accurate, and these are new guns. The Mk II is more expensive (at least locally) because they aren’t making them anymore and they are very desirable, people want them a lot more than the Mk. III's. The Mk. III Target I was looking at is a .22/45, but it was listed as "Mk. III Target." I don't think there is an actual (non .22/45) Mk. III target.... I believe they just call it a Mk. III to indicate it has the new Mk. III "features" like the loaded chamber indicator and the magazine disconnect.

I own a 22/45 MKII, with a 5.5" bull barrel. Great gun! I am upgrading my sights to the Hunter sights, love that fiber optic/ v-notch set up. I bet you will be happy with any of the guns with adjustable sights. JDGray

If your price is right on the MKIII Hunter and we are talking about the same gun (stainless, fluted barrel, fiber sights, etc.) that is an amazing price. I got mine for $419 and thought that was a fair price.

I am sure I am wrong about the Hunter price, like I said that was the only one I didn't write down (though I regret it now :) .) Is the Hunter really better than the other Rugers?

Well, some of the attraction is probably style - the fluted barrel is a newish look. In terms of value and accuracy, I'd personally choose any of the 5.5 or 6 7/8 bull barrels, prefer slabside but not necessary, w adjustable sights and the scope rings should be included on newer ones (at least already tapped on the older). "Government" or "Target" are usually part of the full name on those models.

While the 22/45 is a more 1911-like grip, they're part of the frame and tough to modify or replace. I prefer the std or wood target grips on the Mark line which can be upgraded to aftermarket, orthopedic styles as well as removed for cleaning.
