After much thought, I've settled on the following guns + equipment for my $2000 (Aus dollar) budget:

- 1 x Browning BL-22 .22 lever action rimfire
- 1 x CZ 452 American .22 bolt action rimfire
- 1 x Leupold VX-I 2-7x33 scope
- 2 x soft gun bags
- 1 x boatload of ammo

For those wondering I've chosen the BL-22 for 2 main reasons:
1) There is a minimum 9 month - 1 year wait for a Marlin 39 :uhoh:
2) I want something small and light to use for spotlighting vermin at reasonably close ranges with open sights

Just thought I'd share all this info as I have been waiting since the beggining of October last year to get my licence and I'm excited that in another 2 months or so the wait will finally be over, so I've had plenty of time to think about this. I'm a farmer and need these guns but the wait has been frustrating to say the least. Here is a breakdown of the process just to get a firearm, with times where applicable:

1) Apply for licence (5 page form). Must have a valid reason and can usually only get access to bolt or lever, no pump, auto and definitely no auto weapons.

2) Pay $100 or so and provide 100 points of ID

3) Wait 2 weeks

4) Recieve licence application grant in mail

5) Apply to enrol in Firearms Safety Course, pay $150

6) Wait 3 MONTHS to enter the 1-day course

7) Take firearms course, sit 2 theory exams, do 1 practical exam on the range - if exams failed, wait 3 months and pay $150 again. Exams were not particularly difficult, but having said that there were 8 people out of 35 in the class that were repeating for their second time. Also, you will be deemed to fail if you don't achieve a decent score on the range, which is ridiculous considering the people there are trying to buy their first gun, and theoretically it must be considered that many haven't shot a gun in their life.

8) Receive confirmation of results from educational institution (3 weeks)

9) Receive licence confirmation form from police comissioner (3 weeks)

10) Take form into firearms centre, provide 100 points ID, have photo taken

11) Wait for licence to arrive after being processed interstate (2-4 weeks)

12) MILESTONE - NOW HAVE FIREARMS LICENCE - Now to buy a firearm

13) Apply for permit to acquire, buy a gun safe

14) Wait 4 weeks, during which time the Police will come and search the
premises to determine whether the firearms will be stored appropriately. That is, in a gunsafe which is securely fixed to a wall, lockable, with separate lockable ammunition compartment. If not, LICENCE MAY BE RETRACTED (the whole 6 months worth of work) and permit will not be granted!

15) Must purchase firearm WITHIN 2 weeks of granting of permit

16) Register firearm and pay registration fee of $10 per gun

17) MILESTONE - RECEIVE FIREARM. AFTER MOST LIKELY MORE THAN HALF A YEAR SINCE YOU WANTED A RIFLE, AND APPROX AU$550 (or ~US$480) EXPENSES - NOT INCLUDING THE PRICE OF THE RIFLE OR ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT OTHER THAN THE PERMIT AND LICENCE TO OBTAIN THE GUN. :banghead:

wow. this thread needs to be stickied just to show people what can happen if the liberal government takes controll. I'm a UAW member and I dont know how many times I hear the " they won't ever take your guns" reply. Maybe so., but educate yourself on those that are running and vote.

Sorry to get off topic but after reading all you had to do I couldnt even think about your rifle. It sounds nice good luck.

holy cow glad i don't live where ever it is you do. i don't the people's republic of California is that bad yet!

He is in Australia, sounds like the state of Western Australia as they limit access to pump actions.

OP, I personally own the CZ452 in .22 magnum and .17HMR. My BIL & father both have the CZ452 in .22lr. They are a great value for money gun. My BIL also has a Remingotn 7615P.223 pump rifle, so they are available. Between the three of us we have six handguns, so it's not impossible to own a wind range of toys.

Expect to pay around $770 for the CZ at this time.

You should be able to pick up a soft gun bags for around $40.

5000 rounds of decent .22 will set you back aroun $300.

You must have a safe installed, minimum $400.00

The Leopold is $290 from Magnum Sports.

A set of rings will set you back around $100

That's $1900 without a lever action rifle thrown in.

If you already have a safe then there is a second hand Browning BL22 on www.usedguns.com.au for $400.00 There was also a Marlin M39M but that has sold.

Good luck with your purchases and have fun hunting.

Ken

I have nothing but pitty for what the "government" is Austrailia put it's good citizens through same for England and other "free" countries. I've got a "cold dead hands policy."

Sounds like a nice rig.

If you're a "good guy" and have to jump through all those hoops to get a couple of 22's it must be hell for the "bad guys" get one. I would not be surprised to see similar regulations in effect here in 25 years or so.

It's not hell for the bad guys in Australia to get firearms any more than it is here in the US. They steal them! Don't kid yourself, only the honest citizens will jump through all those ridiculous hoops for a couple of .22 cal rifles.

We Americans need to realize that his plight may become our plight in 2009 depending on which party controls Congress and the White House. When it comes to gun control, the Dems should abandon the donkey as they're party emblem and replace it with a swastika.

First, I think those are fine choices for your needs/wants. You should enjoy them and get great practical use out of them on your farm. :)

Second, anyone who thinks outlawing things makes it hard for Bad Guys to get those things needs to look at drugs. You can get Ye Olde Mary Jane pretty darn easy, and pretty much any other drug you want too. Those folks getting you the drugs? They can get you a gun if you want. At worst, they'll show you to someone who can. The misspent days of my youth(ok, 10-12 years ago in high school) sometimes yield surprising info.

Check out the link in my signature!! It is really scary. The documentary was a post today and I felt so strongly about it I feel everyone should see the documentary on UK and AU.

:)

joe, the great thing about the gun culture is that the subjective is objective. So, whatever you like is a great choice, for you!:D

What a horrible spot to be in to be a legal gun owner in Australia. Here in the states we need to resolve to fight harder so your fate does not become ours!

Shoot straight, kangaroo bait.:p
