I know there are other thread running on this, but at this point they are already at 20 pages long.

I know that we were expecting S.659 to come to a vote soon, so what is up with there now being S.1805?

I then heard that it was going to be debated and voted on Thursday, but now I see that a lot happened today.

Can someone summerize exactly what happened, what is happening, and what this all means?

Please?

Six hours of whiney debate, four hours of silence, a few minutes of heck.

They proposed about five amendments, and scheduled tons of debate. It was an unanimous decision.

It means you need to call your represenitives, and the NRA or any other pro gun groups you feel like calling.

There are a LOT of amendments; both pro and anti-gun that will be considered over the next few days.

Keep hitting your Senators...

So far all that has happened is that we won the vote to invoke cloture (stuff a filibuster).

That gives us a lot of advantages in stopping amendments but we apparently are either too rube to understand the Senate or we just pissed all those advantages away as we let about 9-11 amendments be tacked on to the bill.

The five big amendments we couldn't stop because they were filed before cloture were:

AWB Renewal
Gunshow background check
Civil liability for straw purchase
Minor clarification of civil liability and criminal charges
Nationwide concealed carry for LEOs

There are a bunch of other amendments tacked on to those but I doubt they will go anywhere...

The politicians...

were simply acting like politicians. This applies to both parties, just about all of the time. Right now, their primary concern is the production of a nice dog & pony show for the media. At the end of their terms, however, they'll be concerned with getting their lazy rear-ends re-elected to office.

All too frequently, they don't see a connection between the two. It's up to us to convince them that there IS one.

So, the AWB is still breathing, eh? Who'd'a thunk.:uhoh:

I phoned my Senators last week, and spoke to aides. The first one, Gordon Smith, his aide said he was in favor of 659, and against any additions to it. When I mentioned that Feinstein wanted to attach a rider with the AWB on it, the aides response was a sarcastic "Well, isn't that nice of her".

The response from my other senator, Ron Wydon, was less than positive. They took down my response, but it didn't sound like they actually cared.

If I understand correctly, Mitch McConnell walked into the (empty?) Senate floor last night, and pulled a "Dole", getting the "unanimous" consent of an empty chamber to extend debate. God, but I hate the way the Senate works! The only time they don't check quorum is when there isn't one.:banghead:
